well, by the looks of how things are in my life right now, i am not going to be able to attend any art school for the next 6-12 months. so in the mean time i am going to try and study and teach myself as much as i can. i just wanted to know if you guys have any recommendations as far as reading materials/websites/instructional dvds that would be valuable to someone in my position. thanks!
*EDIT* I forgot to add: I want to study graphic design and painting. So mostly things that have to do with composition, color theory, technique, and anything else you can think of along those lines

This is not really my area of expertise, but I'm sure someone will be along soon with more comprehensive advice. While you are waiting why not have a look at Sumaleth's Link Archive If you have not already done so. I have found a wealth of knowledge there.

| I've been trying to teach myself as well, as I can't exactly afford school either. I'm afraid I don't know of any books to offer for graphic design, however there are quite a few books on color theory and elements such as albers theory. And there are numerous useful articles in Sumaleth's link archive. Definately be a good idea to check the speed painting thread daily too, if not browse through the entire thing! Good luck on self teaching, it's tough. |

I don't know 'how far' you are with drawing, but if you're a beginner (like me) '(the new) drawing on the right side of the brain' could do you good.
I am reading it now and my perspective on drawing is bit by bit changing (in a positive way  )

It's a group of people who want to improve.
There are links to websites and threads.
There will be lessons ... but we just started working on them.
There are some assignments already though.
And you can get feedback there and pointers on what you should work on ...

allright, thatnks for the info so far. yeah, i actually have already read "drawing on the right side of the brain" but im sure it wouldnt hurt to have another go at it. Thanks especially for the Middle Class thing, Andy. Thats about where i would place myself, in the middle. Im good, but not great. hopefully great someday though

This is a bit off-topic thing, but here goes anyway.
I can't help but feel a little stupid when someone calls himself good, because it's very subjective thing to begin with and most of all, you get worse the more you learn. I used to think I was pretty good at drawing when I was a kid, but I've learnt that the more you start to understand things the more you know you don't know.
The reason I wanted to say this is that I have personally found being humble a good starting point for improvement. |

yeah, i totally know what you mean. i used to think so too. all through high school i just had people telling me how good i am, and its only been the past two years that i have been realizing really how far i have to go. Looking back on that it almost seems foolish to have thought i was any good. But i would still hate to call myself a bad artist, i mean, ive got to give myself *some* credit for the countless hours ive spend doing this. i do think i have come a long way, and i know i can think that while still staying humble. i just try to remember that the long way i have come isnt any where near far enough. like i said, i am in the middle

i have this book, called "principles of form and design", by wucius wong. it goes through graphic design principles, mostly about 2d shapes but goes a little into 3d shapes too... i'm not sure if i can recommend it, but could be worth checking out.
this book explains the principles only, it's mostly very basic stuff, but i suppose it can be good reference.
it has a gahillion examples of everything, lots of pics. |
