Is there any specific reason why using a grid is an advantage?

I assume you're talking about Photoshop's grids. They're useful in design work. For digital painting, you'll probably want to ignore them.

I use grids both on and off the computer when drawing from difficult photos. It's a great way to measure a picture and it allows you to focus on just one area at a time. The technique of using grids to train the human eye to see shapes in objects they are drawing has been used for 100's of years.
Not sure of this is what you wanted to know, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

When you work with vector illustrations or AutoCAD, grids are what football is with footballplayers. The most fundamental thing. Nuff said. |

Until 5 days ago, whenever the grid pic was posted .... I never even heard of using a grid =O but I think I might it seems rather helpful, I know about the mis-proportions deal... he he he...
Any specific process on how this is done?? |

Imdaking - try checking out http://www.artlair.com/lessons_portraits.html
to see a sample of how I used a grid to draw a portrait on the computer.
If you are drawing from the computer to paper you can set up a one inch grid in PhotoShop over the photo you are drawing from... then sketch a one inch grid on paper, it works pretty well. I did a nice dog picture using that method (but I don't have a copy scanned sorry).
