I put up my website the other day and it's starving, it needs hits!
Oh well. I'm having trouble finding a way of getting people to visit it. Any suggestions as to how? So please check it out.

*Ahem* your site is TOO SLOW... you using too big gfx files (my start page have only 4Kb of size with all gfx). Make it simple !
jasoN, what do you want - promote your art or getting tons of hits? Look for older posts about site'n'art promotion. Also go to the DBM site - i've found there some good web design tips.

Yeah, the site could be a LOT faster, and in this case there's an easy way to get the file sizes down: Save as gifs. Since the graphis were mostly lines and text, you could probably get it crammed into a few k.

Pretty cool! I like the slick not mucked up look... =)

The load times weren't too bad on mine. But... If you are not going to change the site anytime soon, I suggest going and downloading a compression program, I know Fireworks works pretty well, you can get a 30 day trial on that ... Or in photoshop, I am assuming thats what was used... You can set the .jpg compression to around 5-6-7 ... Depending on how long the load times are.... but with that you lose quality.

Also it seems like you got a nice gallery going... except for one thing... The multiple pop-ups... Those really piss me off! hehe... It is annoying to have another window pop up when looking at all the images, you should either have a back button on your page... or you should find out how, I don't know... to just keep the same pop-up window open and have all the images load up in there...

Thats just my humble opinion!! =)

Looks good, I'll show ya'll my exstensive masterpiece in a bit though! mwuhahaha

its all about spiders baby.. add META tags before </head> and after </title>

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="BRING IT!">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="BRING IT!">

in content of keywords type keywords like "art, computer art, game art, cgi, sex, pr0n" etc. and in description content put brief description of your site ie "JasoN's kickass computer art site! check it in!!"

then submit it on addme.com

actially 90% of your hits will be from altavista cause at my site i still get 20 hits a day though i last updated it 2 years ago ;p

ok thanx people!
I really had no idea about the load time so I'll figure something out. Oh and some of the pop ups I can't avoid because I can't get rid of the advertising. Oh well.
Leo: When I say I want heaps of hits, that basically means I want to promote my site and art.
Thanx again for your tips guys!

Ok, and i think that you can remake some of your gfx elements into simple html code.
Yeah i agree with Affected - use a simple GIFs with minimum of colors.

"i think that you can remake some of your gfx elements into simple html code."

How do I do that? What do you mean? Sorry, but I'm not much of a whiz when it comes to HTML. I only know the basics, like linking etc..

Thanx

I get most of my hits through links. Pursue links!

Submit art to places like gameart.com, and online galleries. If you notice someone is linking sites similar to yours, ask them to link yours.

Shamelessly self-promote! Spam your URL in your sig, in e-mail, everywhere. Get involved in communities like this one, and get noticed.

Maybe try one of those banner exchange programs. I've never done that, though...

Good luck.

imdaking: in this case JPGs are not a good alternative. They should be used for photographs and generally images with plenty of colours. Since the design is B/W, and consists mainly of line drawings, GIFs are the best alternative. You could use a very minimal palette and still get no loss in quality whatsoever, and the file sizes would be a fraction of what they are now...
By the way, Ulead's Smartsaver is also a very good image optimization program.

Oh yeah, links are good. Most of my referrals come from http://www.falkenzone.com. Getting a link on some popular page can be a VERY good thing, if you want visitors. I still only get about 30 unique visits a veek, though... Search engine submissions and meta tags didn't do much for me.

Uh well, sometimes if your are using simple elements like boxes, lines ... you can create it with only html tags... hear something about 'text design'? Look at... say... altavista or this forum pages. See? It's only a few gfx elements and mainly text.

He's not talking about the pop-up add windows, he's tlaking about when you click on the art it brings it up in a new window. The anchors (the <A HREF=""> tags) are targeted at "_blank" which opens a new window when clicked on. If you set it to just "artwindow" or something, when you click on it, it'll open a new window, but it'll be named "artwindow" (not visibly, but the browser will remember that window as "artwindow"). Every time you click on a link targeted at "artwindow" it'll open in that window. If people like to load all the art in an individual page, they can do it now. Else, you can just open the link in a new window by right clicking the link and selecting that option, or use whatever keyboard shortcut your browser uses to do that.
