Yo,
I like your art, and I was just wondering, how you work...what brushes do you use? and in what order?
iv tried like..first small loaded oils..
then using, "just add water" and "total oilbrush"... im really having trouble with the oilpaint, they dont work like the do in reality.. it just doesnt look smooth.

Thanks for the interest.
As you probably know, I use Painter 5.5. Until recently, my process was this: Lay down flat colors with the Loaded Oils brush, blend with the Sable Chisel Tip Water brush, then sometimes smooth with the Just Add Water brush.
Here's an example: http://funhousedigital.com/temp/circle01.jpg http://funhousedigital.com/temp/circle02.jpg http://funhousedigital.com/temp/circle03.jpg
Lately, I've been experimenting with painting WITHOUT blending. I still lay down flat colors, then I pick a color in between those two colors (by holding ctrl to switch to the eyedropper) and paint an intermediate tone, and keep repeating the process. This seems to give me more control, as well as a rougher, more textured look.
Good luck!

thanks! ill try it..!
I have my own little mapp on my HD named "Funfetus"
I really like that picture of that screaming creature.."find", or whatever the name is.
Another question: Do you draw a outline before you start? Or do you just start blobbing around paint? |

Funbaby did a new pic!$*($*(#
Check out Gameart to see his masterpiece To my knowledge, it's the first gaming-related piece that he's done (correct me if I am wrong please), and it's very well done.
I advise all to check it out. Then send me lots of money for turning you on to it heh.

Binke --
Glad it worked out for you. That method has always felt more natural to me than building up color with the airbrush. Don't just take my word for it, though -- experiment with everything, and find what works best for you. Like just last night, I started trying to be Craig Mullins with the Photoshop-like paintbrush, and it seems to have some potential, so I may end up incorporating those techniques into my repertoire.
Oh yeah, to answer your question, with most of my pieces, I start with an outline and then paint it in, but on some, I just start "blobbing around paint" -- these would be the "find" one and the "nude" one. You can definitely see the difference. These pieces also usually take me about 1/20th the time that the others do.

Heh, thanks a lot for outing me. :P I'd been meaning to post that pic, but forgot. You are correct, that is the first gaming-related piece I've done. It's going to be Spotlighted on gameart.com soon.
For everyone else who didn't see it, here's a link:

Later.

ye..iv used Photoshop for 4 years now, but i want to try out some new schtuff..
the only thing i think Painter is lacking, is lightening effects, its alot easier to achieve nice lightening effects in Photoshop.
although if you fiddle around for a while, you can achieve the same result in Painter as well.
Well i succeded in painting an apple
hehe..
btw nice pic funfetus, but you should try adding some more "lightning effects" on the lightning. Same with the torch. But very nice shading indeed.. |

I'm sorry to tell this, but I dont like that Raziel pic that Funfetus did for gameart. It looks amateurish (PLEASE, no offence aaight?) and the work you have in your page, Funfetus, is SO much better than that pic. Really man, I love that 'real paint' look you have in your 'portfolio'. But that Legacy of Kain pic looks flat, uninspired and the lighting in the background is very lame. Fire is weird also. Although the clouds are nice.2
Sorry for bashing it so much, its only my opinion anyway ;P |

Yeah, that's what everyone else told me too.
Eh.
