i spent about 3 nights on the comic; this would be the first time i've attempted to create smooth linework, or even a cartoon of this nature before. in hindsight, the perspectives are quite bad and the 3rd panel arm is probably not humanly possible ^_^ (rushing to finish before a 6am deadline).
any tips on inking or flat-coloring would we welcome. at the moment, the inking was done by carving out thick lines with an eraser tool... but i imagine there are better, more efficient methods. thanks.

Looks pretty good, it's clean and simple, but ditto on what Herb said. |

I think it's obvious that Tech Boy has been busy all night surfing porn. He then finds that it is 5 am and suddenly he is dreaming of this big haired chick who hes holding in his arms. But then hes back in computer class and we see that he's actually been sleeping this whole time and has some sort of white viscous fluid all over his mouth.
I think it's a witty an informative quip on the state of social norms in today's every progressing achievement oriented society. _________________ It's sad how entire families can be torn apart by something as simple as a pack of rabid wild dogs |

dan, i must say that you stunning analysis was remarkably on-target for such a concise commentary on the state of modern affairs, and the parallels you made to the 'social norms' of our day was just riveting.
for the rest, i apologize for the [nonexistent] plot of the comic; it's a hasty combination of 2 inside jokes, the first being a long-lasting comic from last semester (tech girl) and the habit of staying up late and falling asleep in the office (while on an internship). as for the 'white viscous fluid', i honestly intended that to be drool, but make of it what you will. along the same topic of unintended sexual innuendo's, i originally had placed a tissue box atop the monitor in the first panel, but skipped it in the inking process.
just for kicks, below is the comic i submitted for last week's edition (my first work for the paper). some bg story on the subject matter: my school (stevens-tech in new jersey) recently picked up some ludicrous award, as quoted on the sign... this just 2 weeks after they took away our nice internet-2 connection and began filtering our network traffic (now only 15 mbit shared for everyone)... leaving the ~1200 students on campus in less than an appreciative mood.

another long night; thought i'd post the final version of this friday's submission. i opted for a different coloring style just to play around (no benefit for printing)... hopefully, there won't be any problems deciphering the plot-line this time around. and in hindsight, i'm now aware that hay does not come in crates.

Assuming I'm not completely out of touch and Shizer isn't some new slang that's slipped past me, I believe the word you're looking for is 'Scheisse!' |

tinusch: i ran it through the editors before i started coloring and it passed... it's a small college newspaper, so as long as there's no blatant obscenity or insulting of the administration (there goes some great comic ideas), it should be fine to print.
as far as 'shizer' is concerned, i slipped that in for a friend of mine who always goes around saying it... just to surprise him friday. |

not worth starting a new thread, so unless there are any objections, here's the comic for this week. some bg info: our school mascot is a duck, our campus police are notorious for living up to most every stereotype about campus police, and lately around town, there've been a string of public urination offenses, mostly from drunk yuppies on the weekends. and lastly, the background in panel 2 is a salute to my roommate's forbidden love for the local dunkin' donuts cashier.
btw, if anyone would like to chime in with their own strips, you're more than welcome to turn this into a comic strip thread (dunno if there's been such a thing in the past). |

Nice, stuff here, Jerm- I like the one about the internet connection. Since you've opened this up as a comic thread, I've decided to contribute. This is something I'm going to send to The Funny Papers of Philadelphia- a very cool, yet very hard to find (I don't suppose anyone can help me on that?) comic newspaper. This isn't the finished piece, though, it's just kinda slapped together- I'm more concerned with if it's funny or not. Now I just need to get working on transferring the other comic I've been working on for 3+ years on to the computer...

No insulting of the administration??? I guess the same goes for the articles... nothing more insulting than criticism, is there?
Allow me to introduce to you easily the best campus related comic ever:
Space moose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
And here's some of mine, from the adventures of the amazing Dr. Badger:
edit: oops, i left in a finnish "pang", when i wanted a "bang". ahaha, i wanted a "bang". ha-ha-ha. I kill myself. Well, I would, but I have to fail with something first.
hrmmm. wow. that made absolutely no sense at all. |

been away since i last posted, taking care of other things, but i'll have a new comic for this week up by monday night, hopefully. on with some comments...
a-13: the premise is nice, and i know the comic is just a concept, but your rendition of the chicken is just awesome. as for the flow, it could be the positioning of everything, but the punchline (or whatever it is) seems a bit too gradual. the kicker is obviously the cooked bird in panel 4, but the stove takes most of the surprise out of it. perhaps replacing the stove with a pot with a lid on top... that wouldn't necessarily be as direct as an oven, and the drawing of the object would be more in line with the other panels (as opposed to the large stove).
klaivu: your art style rocks, especially the rabbit/dog/floppy-eared thing. and you've got the jokes down pat as well, great stuff; hope to see some more of your work.
mcnasto: i assume you did the art ^_^, i love the style on the pool table. the conversation would be perfect if it were a flash cartoon, just to get the voice tones. do you have a link to the existing comics from the series? |

very much appreciated, andi =), is that an past item from your collection, or made after you saw the thread?
here's my offering for this week. it proved harder to pass through the censors than the "great blazes" comic... the story (if i even have one) picks up from last week.

taking that as a challenge, i've put the president of our school to pen with panel 3. a few friends made up some spoof flyers to hang up around campus last week, and it created a buzz around campus, so i was encouraged to stuff it into the comic. the whole process is getting easier and less time consuming each week, so chalk up another one for experience:

here's my offering for this week. i'll apologize ahead of time, since a lot of inside references were made, and it'd probably take a good paragraph to explain everything.

YO, JERM!!!
If you want clean lines, use FLASH. Scan a ruff, then import the jpg, bmp, whatever. Put it on 1 layer, lock it...then use the paint brush tool with tip pressure on and...TADOW!!!...CLEAN ASS LINES!!!
Use Optimize for shape cleaning or use the lil' smooth or straighten tools and cook til' served.
Color in Flash or...(what I do) save as a PNG, and import into PHOTOSHOP.
Resize it. Color dat puppy up and send it to the world, my friend.
Cheers! |
