I have a question. How do you keep brushes from making white on new layers? Because, whenever I start a new layer, it makes some white. |

That happens with smear type brushes. In the layers palette, make sure to click on the option called "Pick Up Underlying Color".

Hi,
While checking the Pick Up Underlying Colors box works just fine in a lot of cases, it can potentially be a mess later on.
For instance, if you paint on Layer 1 with the Pick Up Underlying Colors box checked, then add Layer 2, drag it below Layer 1 and paint with different colors than those picked up on Layer 1, it's likely it'll look pretty bad since the colors picked up from underlying Layers or the Canvas on Layer 1 won't blend with the new colors on Layer 2.
Some other options, in case they're needed:
When painting on a Layer with a brush variant that has blending or smearing characteristics, it will work just fine on existing color and only leave white edges on transparent areas of the Layer, so move the Resat slider to 100% when painting over transparent areas of the Layer.
Or....
When using brush variants that have blending or smearing characteristics, work on the Canvas instead of a Layer.
Planning ahead will save you a lot of grief when using these brush variants, needless to say.
Good luck,
Jinny Brown
