The Sony looks like a better deal to me. A lot of accessories. Even though i don't like Sony cams.
However both of them seem to be on the same level. So both of them are good.

For anything to do with digital cameras, check out www.dpreview.com - best site on the internet for digi cam reviews.

Goddamnit, I had a big, fat intelligent reply written out, and I hit the back button. Oh well. I'll just reiterate in second-draft form.

Skip both of those cameras, go buy a Nikon Coolpix 3100 or a Canon A70 or A80 (the A80 has a nice flip-out screen). They're sufficient for 8 x 10" prints and pictures for the web.

See, digital cameras being inherently technological, they attract all sorts of gear fetishists and engineering types who obsess over numbers. It's easy to understand how people get trapped into believing that a 5700 will produce better pictures than the 3100, or that 6 megapixels offer a huge advantage over 3. You'll do well to look at the technical details of a camera with a critical eye.

That being said, it's still important to look into objective review, especially on http://www.dpreview.com/ The guy who runs that site is meticulous in his evaluation of cameras. Plus, there's a huge message board system, user reviews, and an in-depth glossary.

Thanks for responding

Impaler: Thanks. Why you say skip? because only price? i'm looking on Nikon in the Ebay. i only discovered Dpreview, but don't understant the reviews very good..(also bad english Shocked )

one question. can some Nikon Lense fit that sony camera, or only? or only dsc-f717 lense?

what is it disadvantage for going for this sony dsc-f717 camera?

i want to have some detail pictures. maybe some "macre"? also i'm using some texturing. and usually for referencing..is lense more important? which one? also, is sony dsc-f717 compatibility good with a lense?

the thing about lens kits is that they're a poor substitute for proper lenses.. thats why i went for a digital slr..

the lenses don't replace the existing lens on the camera, i think you've gotten confused with tradition SLR camera's, the lenses supplied attach to the end of the fixed lenses on the camera's..

out of those 2 camera's i'd choose the nikon..

well they both have the same res- but the Nikon allows a greater field of lower resolutions to choose from, it has 8x zoom unlike the 5x of the sony, it takes compact flash I or II so u have a greater size selection of cards to choose from inc microdrive. the nikon has more white balance control. you also have a wider choice of compression with the nikon including shooting RAW (allows you to change a wide selection of settings before converting to a working file).

the nikon takes pictures with less noise..

but this is only my personal prefs

Sorry to post in an old topic, but I just bought a Sony Digicam (DSC-P8) off ebay (as it is muchos cheaper than buying one here in Canadian dollars), and I was just wondering whether if anyone knows whether it is possible to use these digital cameras (or any kind) as a webcam with any particular software. I was contemplating buying a webcam since I gave my sister my Olympus digicam (she broke it already), but ended up splurging some cash onmyself for a b-day present I can barely afford. Stupid student lifestyle...
