Hello.

I have been used to paint and brush, and am now entering the world of computer graphics. I have my own ideas on the answer to my question in the title, but I need confirmation or rebuuttal.

I have Photoshop 5, but also I have Illustrator 8.

Illustrator looks like a whole lot of trouble to get into, and photoshop is more like my usual method.

"There is the board, there is the paint, there are the brushes. Pick them up and go"

Whereas Illustrator has all these paths and grdient meshes and I had trouble even getting the thing to draw a line without it filling itself in.

Am I reading this right? Should I continue with photoshop and master it? or should I get my head into Illustrator 8?

I do have a small graphic tablet and will be buying another soon. The one I have is the 'genius tablet' very small but better than a mouse.

Thanks!

The principal difference between Photoshop and Illustrator is that they are in different leagues. Photoshop is a bitmap program while Illustrator is a vector based program. Both are really different.

I use both anyway, each has their pros and cons.

Cheers!

If you used to Paint, Photoshop is DEFINITELY more for you than Illustrator. Illustrator is more of a graphic design tool. You MAY want to check out Metacreations' Painter, though -- I come from a traditional art background, and Painter works much better for me.

I agree with Funbaby, if you come from a traditional background Photoshop is a much better choice. And again, as Funbaby mentioned, you should look at Metacreations Painter -- it definitely has THE most traditional "feel" that I have come across. However, I do find it a little finicky to use. I too also came from a traditional background -- concept for id, almost took a position at Disney, although my girlfriend prevented me from moving away to California. And I graduated from Sheridan College (best art school in Canada) with a full scholarship, and .. uhh.. i am bragging WAY too much. Sorry

In summary, use Photoshop over Illustrator -- unless you are looking to do web graphics / print ...

K, bye

Heh

As far as Sheridan being the best school in the WORLD, I can't say one way or another -- I do know for a fact that it is the best in Canada, though. Anything else I told you would be misinformed -- although, you could very well be right.

What they look for in students? Hrmm.. I suppose it depends on what program you want to get in to. I "majored" in "Arts and Ideas" my first year which was basically dedicated to traditional mediums ONLY. After that I moved into Graphic Design / Animation, which centered more around the use of the computer (Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, etc.) And for each new course that I took, I was required to go through another interview. But if I was to sum up how to impress them, I would tell you to make a VERRYY extensive portfolio for your interviews. They say that marks matter, but in reality they don't. They look for talent. Show them you have talent, and you're pretty much guaranteed an admission.

Good Luck!

Aye, Use Illustrator if you wan't to make more 'clean' type of illustrations and scalable ones too.

You could do it with Photoshop too but it might be a b**ch to do a simple picture which takes 1 meg with bitmap but a lot less with vector illustration.

Cheers!

Well, our art teacher at school (A high school with an emphasis on the visual arts) keeps saying what design schools and the like look for is originality. She told us of one school, that had given the applicants an assignment, which was to make a photograph on the theme of 'happiness'. Everyone, who sent in a photo of a happy face was immediately disqualified.

Hello!

Thanks for your help. I will use both and take a look at the Metacreations software. I like the'lines' in Illustrator, to sketch and then go to photoshop.

After the traditional stuff, I really like the concept of layers.

So, whats SO good about this Wacom tablet? Why is it better than other tablets?

Thanks again, you people are saving me a lot of time.

Hum... what are some other decent art colleges? I plan to major in compsci, but will probably do *something* at an art school or whatnot afterwards.... or during... whatever.

Well, to answer the original question first, there's definitely a use for both Illustrator and Photshop depending what you're doing. I used to use Photoshop exclusively, and now that I'm in a work environment where I have Illustrator available (along with a co-worked with lots of experience in it) I've found that it's really useful. Now I tend to create text and other shapes in Illustrator, tweak them, then bring them into Photoshop for saving them as web graphics. I am still learning though, there's still a LOT in Illustrator I don't know about. Oh, and if you want to do any Flash animation it's VERY handy to know your way around vector graphics...

Ok, as far as schools, some of the best:
Sheridan
CalArts
Ringling
Art Center College of Design
Pratt

And not to knock anyone who might be attending one, but I hear horror story after horror story about the Art Institutes...

I've been to Art Center a few times, and CalArts once. Art Center is just absolutely amazing. The walls are lined with beautiful illustrations, and there's all sorts cool stuff in the gallery area like life-size rubber aliens and whatnot.

CalArts is pretty cool, too...they have an excellent animation program. The people there are really cool, weird people, too. And they have a "clothing optional" swimming pool.
