I found a great piece of reference material in Everyman's Heritage: An Album of Canadian Folk Life, a black and white photo book that features shots of Canadian history from about 1870-1975. I based my drawing on a picture of a covered gateway to a Japanese detention camp in Vancouver, circa 1944. According to the caption, the presence of familiar, traditional forms was a comfort to the detained in times of dislocation and misery.
This is my first attempt using Photoshop 7; previously I had PShop 5.5, and I must say, the difference in brush control is staggering. The wealth of variables you have access to allows for some very fun improvisation of materials.
Any particular comments or critisisms are appreciated; as well, tips on getting the most out of the PShop 7 brush engine are welcome. |

Love the textures and it definately has a sort of forlorn/meloncholy mood very appropriate to the subject. |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words.
Oh, by the way, I checked this out on one of the fancy new Macs at school, and the dark areas appeared a lot more choppy than they do on my monitor. If you see what I'm talking about, try lowering your gamma a couple notches to get a gist of what I intended in terms of value.
...Upon further examination, I wonder if this drawing even qualifies as finished. Today was my submission date for Grade 12 Art, so I didn't have time or fortitude to squeeze out really fine details... but I really didn't intend to in the first place. At any rate, I probably will update this soon. More comments and critisism would be capital! |
