I'm trying to get a fairly large painting going on, trying to lay down some big 'washes' with a big brush. Is Photoshop's clunky, laggy response with large formats just a fact of life or is there a way to optimize its responsiveness?

ps. My system ain't no slouch either

Image size say, 3000 x 3000 pixels
RAM allocation, um, about 75% of total.

I must note as well, it seems to chug mostly with those faux natural media brushes.

Lower the Resolution. The more layers you have, the bigger the file size, thus slowing down your computer.

running on that ol' memory hogger XP?

i've just oppend a 250x250mm @ 300dpi (3000x3000) image and started painting - put a few extras on the brush and some layers so as to try and tax it..

having no chug-a-lug problems with it..

Dual PIII 1.1Ghz + 2GB RAM - 80% RAM allocated to PS cache @ 8..

[EDIT]
just re-read ur fist post - just pushed brush to a 700 and tried some strokes, chug chug went the boat Smile i think its a problem with PS and v large brushes...

was faster @ drawing if i was using my mouse instead of tablet..

The brush stepping makes a big impact- especially with larger brushes. Try adjust the brush stepping in the brush option window to see if you can find a balance between image quality and performance. You may find that you can increase stepping significantly without hurting image quality.
