I'm currently working on a commission that requires painting an old German cathedral, but I'm having trouble applying the varying brick colors for the texture...can anyone point the way to somewhere that can help me or provide suggestions as to how to approach this?

You could paint a 2d texture and apply it to a painting with base colors only.
In Gimp it's the transform tool that does that ... don't know how it's called in other Programs.

Just use a different layer for the textures and change the opacity.

This approach might help if the problems only exist when you try to draw bricks in 3D. Confused

The one with the textures might look ugly but it was done in about 5 minutes.
I used the same texture for all the faces of the cube.

You mean I'll have to apply a texture map as if it were a decal? There are so many faces for the structure....gaaah =/

The old cathedral in question has brick of noticeably varying sizes, so that's why I was wondering if there was a decent way of directly painting that texture on.

I'm sure it's possible to do it with the right brushstrokes.
But I guess it's a long way to learn how that is done. Good luck though.

Hope there'll be more helpful replies ...

Maybe with lasso and mask tools somehow?
