How long does it take, usually for you to make a fully digital painting from sketch to final? I've been pretty curious about how long it takes people to finish a drawing so please post a quick reply if you can.

Damn ... I wrote a lot ... and when pressed the preview button I got:
"invalid session"

Again ... I think there should be a disclaimer.
It's a bad thing if you ask yourself if you work fast enough.
Take the time you need to get the result you want. Work as long as you feel comfortable.
That means if you desperately try to work faster it is just as bad as working on an image forever just because you don't want to give up.

Better draw/paint something simpler in that case or work on several images simultaneously.

Invest time in trying different tools. Try different approaches and remember to look for errors and fix them.
You'll do that habitually later.

You need to invest time to be able to work faster and still be satisfied with the result later.

Now back to the question:
The more detailed images for the fan art thread took me about 9 hours average:
Example 1
Example 2

The faster 500 List images took about 2 hours average I guess (with considerable fluctuations):
Example 1
Example 2

They were all done from life or reference though.

Dont let his 9 Hours scare you if it takes you longer. http://www.fantasy-anime.org/tdc/sorinav21500.htm This one took me about 3 months, mostly procrastination but still took 3 months. Others have taken even longer.

I have been makeing attempts to speed things up though....

until recently, finished pieces would take around 20 hrs usually over a 3 or 4 week period, but i'm down to 5-8hrs now, as you progress you know what NOT to paint so it saves time, also goes down when your drawing skill rises, penulum like, i'm still classing myself in the beginner category though

It varies with how detailed each piece is and how familiar you are with the tools you're using to create the piece. This one HERE took me around 3 hours... it has some more touching up but I won't get around to it because I was doing the piece to practice my speed.... its just a character in a pose and if it had a real background it would have taken alot longer.

Man, this question rocks. I've always wondered this very same thing. Sometimes it's really disheartening to see someone's work and think "damn, why am I just not getting that." Outside of the obvious answer of "you lack skills, young jedi" it's nice to know that for some of these people, it looks that good because they actually took the time. It's helped me to learn to actually take the time on an image and not get frustrated if a masterpiece doesn't present itself in 2 hours.

Of course, some of you art monkeys can produce some phenominal work in a short time too (see Skrubbles skribble (har har)...that's an awesome piece).

I think this took me about 8 hours or so over the course of a couple of evenings. And that's a pretty simple piece...no background, no color. I have yet to actually "complete" a piece that's worthy of being called a, well, completed picture. I'm pretty much just starting out though.

Thanks for asking that question, dfacto!
