I've never been interested in painting, only drawing, but a couple of days ago I decided to give Painter a go. To get started, I did Even Michelsens apple & tomato Painter tutorials, and then wanted to try to draw a human face from a photo. It took me about 6 hours. C&c appreciated!

Ya know, I think this is really great and if I could see the photo I could see how close the likeness is.
This post is being treated like the plague because I think there are a handful of people that think maybe there was too much reference used. Like... In a bad way.
...someon will would jump in and say "WOW! GREAT JOB!" and then someone would post the ref pic and say - "ITS OBVIOUSLY RIPPED STRAIGHT OFF THE PIC!" And Person "A" would look like an idiot.
Im throwing myself on your grenade.
It has that kinda look to it.
But if not - Great Job!
If so - What a waste of your time...
The Tongue looks a little dark. |

hey
First off I'm kind of a lurker, and I won't be able to post until I get a new scanner, cause my brother stuck a magnet on the other one...
Anyways, I don't mean to state the obvious...but it looks like a paintover to me, because of the way the teeth are kind of crooked, and the texture on her skin looks too natural. Anyways...don't mean to step on toes. But a very good paintover I'd have to say, if I am correct in my assumption. And if it isn't, well it's a good picture, and I really like the art on your website.

I've drawn a lot before, so I have a good grasp of basic anatomy, but I've usually rendered skin as one flat color. I painted this as an exercise to learn how skin (and other details on a face) really looks. The skin texture was made by drawing about 200 dots/blotches using burn/dodge, and then using the "add grain" brush to add pores/fuzziness.
The picture is an attempt to "copy" the colors and proportions on a photo using only my eyes as guide. It is NOT a paintover.
For me, it definitely wasn't a waste of time, as I learned a lot about drawing skin/faces and about using Painter effectively (hey, it's only my third attempt at using Painter even if you count the tutorials I did). I also learned not to rely on a really sloppy original sketch (as you can see from the progress pics below, I had to adjust the mouth and chin after I had started painting).
