OK how about everyone draw their version of a Cigar in an Ashtray with matches or a lighter nearby.... Cigar can be lit or unlit...... Color or B&W anything goes....

How about it? Post your pics to this thread.......

In case people are wondering what this is about...(if you dont read the random musings forum) i had mentioned thinking of selecting a subject matter that everyone will go and draw and then come back with so we can all see the range of styles and stuff like that.

Kusanhagi's is a good one to start with. After reading the replies to that post, i wanna some how organize this better, and make it a regular thing and somehow have the "official" subject of the week, so we dont get 50 different suggestions every day.

This week's though, i like the ashtray idea so lets go with that. If you have any suggestions on how this could be better organized, please throw in your ideas (maybe in a different post subject).

(oops, DukeZ i just saw your post, sorry bout that)

I have to say the idea is too specific for what I want to do. I think a word or two , just to get people's imaginations going would be more interesting. This would be an exercise in technique, obviously, I'd rather see the posts showing the creativity of the participants.

I think that even with 3 specific objects being required in this idea it still leaves plenty of room for creativity. There are numerous variations on cigars, lighting instruments and ashtrays. And I would think since you can go any way you want with it that the ashtray is going to be the clincher. Imagine the possibilities.......

Umm.. personally I think Kusanhagi wants us all to draw "cigars" so he can use our pictures in some way or another on his page. I mean, a cigar? That isn't exactly the most interesting thing to draw...

No, it's not very interesting. But it's your job if wish to participate to make it come to life and make it interesting This is a great way to start off!

Just a Thought: Everyone should hold off posting their pics until the deadline day so no one copies each other.

dhab.

check this one. www.3dluvr.com

They keep contests like you mentioned regularly, only 3d ofcourse.

might be an idea to try?

Also I might add for such a contest to be interesting, one should have an interesting topic, and be able to spend some time on it(for better results).

This is a good idea
the task description is fairly long and sounds specific. But I think it's mainly because the typical art competition request these days is "do a piece about orange. interpret anyway you like, use any medium" and stuff like that.
but this is fine by me

I think they're should be two comps running - one for digital media, with parameters for the image given on a regular basis, but still free to interpretation and creativity. image size, image format, and subject. Basic stuff. I also think a colouring comp would be good too... pull some inked work from comic book artists and see who's interpretation of colour wins out, I guess. I know I'd like to see how everyone would do colouring a Joe Mad pic or something....

Made this in about an hour and a half with mouse which explains why the perspective is crappy and some things are lopsided (should have drawn it on paper and scanned :\ ) http://moo.thirddimension.net/cigar.html

I did not suggest this topic to get something for my web page. I have Julie of Julie's How to Draw Anime site doing page art for me. Sheesh! Not every topic for drawing is something you will go gaga over. Believe me, I don't relish doing Auto Dealership web pages, but I do them as well as I do any work I do because it helps build your skills. As for the cigar art I am going to be participating myself.

Suspicious bunch ain't ya!?

Hey moo

i agree great pic! C'mon Kusanhagi, i think he deserves a prize. On the subject of prizes, i think if these drawing subjects go on successfully, and everyone contributes, with Dhabihs pull, and Kusanhagi obvious resources, maybe it could develop into a mini comps, with small(alright humungous) prizes awarded. I think the idea of everyone drawing something is excellent, esp if people record their steps, and give advice.

-again, nifty pic mOO, care to elaborate a bit on how you did it?

Thanks for the comments everyone..

The wood is just noise with motion blur applied to it. Each object was made on a seperate layer with the airbrush and a little dodge tool. The wispy smoke was made using a large soft brush and smudge set fairly high. Is that what you wanted to know?

Great! Nobody every posted any of their Cigar pics... WTF?!

Anywayz, here's my cigar pic http://members.tripod.com/~SpaceDawg/images/cigar01.jpg

Let me know what you guys think. I was too bizzy & lazy to do anything but sketch it. And i even did that really quick here at work. I have a big problem with drawing anything in perspective as you can tell from this pic. So come on, bring it on!!
