Anyone know how to configure photoshop or painter to auto-generate 6 or so values for whatever color you chose? In oil painting I can put the values beside each other on the palette or carry around a black value scale and compare the value of the current color I'm painting with onto the value scale by holding the scale beside the color and squinting. Is there a way in photoshop/painter to generate 6 values for the color you chose, if not what's the best way to do this kind of stuff?

Open up the floating color palette. For a quick ramp between the foreground and background colors, just select the "current colors" option. Be aware that the slider type you've selected will alter the color ramp.

If you specifically need 6 values, it's a few extra stages. Set the color palette to HSB sliders. Adjust the sliders until you get the color you want to start the ramp from. Select the background swatch and adjust the B slider value up or down until you get your value. Now, in a new document, make a linear grad from the background to the foreground color. Convert the mode to index color using local (adaptive) color. Select 7 as the number of colors. Forced, Matte and Dither should all be set to none. USe the eyedrop tool to sample the colors into your swatches palette and you're done.

Thanks, I'll try this out and see how it is although I don't want a ramp between fore/background colors, just 6 values for one color. Not sure if this is even possible without entering some numbers into the color palette.

An even faster method than Pat's is to select a very dark value as one of your colors (doesn't matter which) and select a very light value of the color you want as your other color. Make the color ramp from foreground to background. Next, simply make the palette web-safe. It breaks the ramp down into about 7 values. Works pretty well, too.

Maybe the color wheel in this image from Fred Flick Stone's tutorial helps.
There are 3 values ... but maybe you can make your own optimized version?

Impaler- Thanks, that sounds like what I want although the process is kind of long (assuming I have to keep on repeating that whenever I want 7 values for a certain color). Is there a way to script those actions or something?

Andy- Yeah, the way the diagram has 3 values for each color is what I'm talking about. I want to get a set of values like that for whatever color I chose so I can paint with the right values. I think what I could do is select a palette of colors and make a color wheel like in the diagram for them. The only drawback would be if I wanted to use a different palette I'd have to make another color wheel.

In Painter 8 (also Painter 6 and 7):

NOTE: In Painter 6 and 7, you'll find Colors, Gradients, and Color Sets in the Art Materials palette's Colors, Gradients, and Color Sets sections.

1. Open a new Canvas about 300 x 300 pixels Resolution whatever.

2. In the Gradients palette, choose the Two-point Gradient.

3. In the Colors palette, pick a color, the lightest value you want. This is your Primary Color.

4. Click the Secondary Color square (rear square) and pick the darkest value you want.

5. Use Ctrl/Command+F Using: Gradient to fill the Canvas.

6. In the Color Sets palette, click the left icon and choose Create Color Set from Image. Now you have a new Color Set containing more values than you want.

7. Either pick from them as needed, or edit the Color Set by highlighting each color square you don't want and clicking the minus icon (fourth icon from the left at the bottom of the Color Sets section).

Thanks, that works pretty good for painter, gona mess with it a bit and see how accurate I can seperate 8 or 9 values from those I guess.
