I was recently given a double page spread in a publication to fill - it was an opportunity to have fun with something. This is what I produced...

a larger version of this image can be found here.

The guy in the middle of the crowd is a caricature of myself, the caption for the image was "Paul was beginning to wander whether the unconditional love, adoration and worship really would out-weigh the maintenance costs."

It was modelled in Infini-D and rendered in Bryce5

What do you think?

It's a cute picture - tells a nice story.

I do find the rendering a little harsh though. I'd love to see it radiosity rendered.

hey funny robotey fellows, i like it. maybe some smoothing on the round shapes of the robots?

the rendering is a bit harsh.
is it possible to render with GI in bryce5? not saying that would look better though, as the sharp shadows are an important part of this. i'm just a sucker for GI Smile

edit - lol Suma, you beat me to it Very Happy

I'd agree that the rendering is a tad harsh, but my intent was to keep it looking quite graphic with blocks of colour rather than blended shadows. Though that said - I'll have to have a look just for curiosity's sake.

Erm, what's GI?

Thanks guys Wink

GI = global illumination. basically the same as radiosity, only radiosity is more accurate and more memory intensive(both use very different techniques). if you want to know more, just ask. but i haven't touched a 3d app for about a year, so i'm afraid i'm a little behind on what's possible.

It looks good, but I think it would be a lot easier on the eyes were the shadows not so dark.

Okay, okay; point taken on the lighting. Fact is, it prints as I intended and everyone who has seen the proofs say that the graphic style of the rendering works for it.

The last thing I wanted was to produce yet-another pristine 'LightWave' image. There's so much of it about - and much of it is indistinguishable from the rest. Rounding everything off and using heavily technical lighting setups and rendering options would have defied one of my reasons for creating the image the way I did. I was attempting to emulate another style off illustration I use without having to re-draw everything over and over again. Here's an example of the style I'm aping.

All your points noted, for future reference, but this image really is an exception to the rule - all my other rendered stuff makes good use of more realist lighting.

Okay, elaborate? I'd have to say that because of the lack of other comments to this effect, that your first couple of points probably have more to do with your monitor setup than the image. But too many perspectives? By default, there is only one perspective in this image, so what do you mean?

Otherwise, thanks everyone!
