The rules of Draw Club:

. Each theme will last exactly one week.
. We're looking for an effort, not a 10 minute sketch.
. You are not limited to the digital media.
. Do not "reserve" your place, post an image only when you have something to post.
. Feedback is encouraged.
. Keep away from interpretations of an adult nature.
. Post as many times as you like.
. Have fun.

Draw Club #12: Mountain Base

If there's one thing that most digital artists should be able to agree on, it's that matte paintings rock. And in celebration of Sijun's fast new server, this week everyone will get a chance to try their hand at a spot of mattering.

Working on this image:

Click here for a much larger version (90k).

Your task is to add some sort of "base/outpost" using matte-painting techniques.

The genre of base is left to your own imagination. You are also free to modify the background (color/crop/whatever) into any form you like, so long as we can still see the original "plate" in there somewhere.

We're looking for a bit of magic from this one. That is your challenge.

(cred to cgChallenge for the topic)

Very very cool Draw Club for the week, Sumaleth. Although I suck I think I'll take a shot. That looks like Yosemite Valley - great image.

Let's do it!!

2137: Yosemite is a hot destination for interstellar eco-tourism. Guided tours depart every fifteen minutes and are led by an exact genetic clone of either Ansel Adams or John Muir (please specify your clone preference when booking a tour).

my quick-ish version...bout an hour...this is the first time
i try to do a matte piece...geesh...whew...too much work...
but this is probably my favorite draw club concept so far
good work hyptosis!! i really love the stuff on the side of the
mountain...good imagination
we need more participation!!!!

EDIT---balistic ---thats amazing...sharp as hell...i really like how you
altered the scene's color...more brownish and warm rather than the cold
look the original had...

Great stuff so far.

Insider: look at how the cliff face is in shadow - you'd get a stronger effect if you matched that lighting on your castle.

first time i've done anything like this, messed with the colours pretty heavily to give it an oddworldy, post-apocalyptic feel Smile

The key to getting crisp edges is to work on multiple layers so that you can just erase anything that gets mushy.

Cool stuff guys.

Supposed to be a battle in the foreground, haivng some serious contrast issues with the tower though. Either too dark, or too light.

hyptosis i think the tower is alittle too light, make it a bit darker and add some yellow highlights as the explosions are the main light sources that you should focus on. It might also help if u individually gave some of the trees a yellow highlight - just to make it look even more like the explosions are really there. But its still cool - i was gonna do somethin like that until i came up with whats there.

and man mine is bluuury. The original isnt like that.

Those bay door things you've got opening there are very cool. Yeah, darkening the tower.

Hey, great stuff, everyone. It's neat to see how differently everyone interprets the theme.

This is the first time I've tried something like this, and I think I may have been a bit too ambitious for my own good. It took me forever, but I had a lot of fun with it.
