The only professional level art boards that I know of and have full access to are Sijun and CGTalk. In both it seems most finished art is of environments and characters limited to a single unexpanded subject. Is this all there is to professional art?
The reason I ask this is because it does not seem like characters and environments are the majority of high level finished works by a little, but rather by atleast 97%. Is there nothing else that matters as far as art?
This confuses me, because now I wonder how other things are ever created. I look at games like Quake and Half-Life. I see in these games environment maps composed of many 2D images that look like mere textures with occasion objects or designs droped over them. I look at games like Myst and Riven where environments consist of sky, water, and all other things in the middle not to be confused with environmental elements. I look at movies like The Time Machine, City of the Lost Children, and Final Fantasy to see many creative machines, tools, interfaces, and so forth that are neither environments or characters.
I understand that characters and environments are important, but are they so important that nothing else really matters? If so where do companies find the arists who create these objects with a design mindset? Where do these people come from, because I don't see them on the internet?
Is there really nothing more than characters or environments? _________________ http://prettydiff.com/ |

I think you're looking for industrial/entertainment design. There are some industrial designers on Sijun . . . actually, I think spooge's background is in ID if I'm not mistaken. I see plenty of cars and airplanes being painted around here . . .
