Usually I wouldn't allow this sort of thing, but since I'm a moderator I can get away with it. Smile

A project I'm involved in is in the process of setting up some web hosting. Here's the site:

Liquenox Hosting

It's not free hosting or anything, so it won't appeal to everyone.

But because this is something we actually need for another project, our prices aren't going to be inflated like regular hosts. And you won't be stuck to set plans - you can select what bandwidth/storage you need, and everything else is standard (software, domain stuff etc).

Anyway, if you're after some cheap hosting with all the bells and whistles thrown in, fill out the "Reserve" thing and when they server is set up we'll give you a hoi.

We'll get other payment methods in time, but PayPal is a really simple way to get things going.

Yuri: that Dragonstar one is actually expensive!

Lomi: E-Rice does look cheap, but thats because there's a long list of things you cant do on their accounts.

eg. no Perl/CGI/ASP/SSI/shell or telnet access/Jsp/Java/chatroom/cPanel/etc.

Not to mention that you -require- a domain, so thats an extra ~$8/year or so.

And even though they do support PHP/MySQL, if you look at the settings they have on it - you only get very limited use.

So while it is cheap on one hand, if you really want that sort of limited hosting then you can get the same, and better, from free hosting.

I think you need to ask yourself if your site is going to require abilities to script now or in the future. If all you want is a host for your portfolio, E-rice probably has more than enough features, storage and bandwidth for the buck (unless you become really popular). If you plan to sell things, like prints, then you might want the scripting power for a shopping cart. Or you may not if your inventory and expected customer base is very small.

Just because you like Sumaleth, don't let him or anyone else tell you what you need Smile Work out your webpage plan and find out exactly what you need before jumping onto a host. Are you sure you need to spend the extra $26.00 for features you may never use? As always, the preplanned website is the best website.

Also, a small request, if anyone knows any free hosts that don't have banners or annoying pop ups, I'd like to know about it. Thanks.

Good luck,
Brian

My point was that E-Rice is charging for what you can probably get free if you look around.

For example, 10 seconds on google gave me this (free hostings that don't have ads or popups):

http://www.free-webhosts.com/no-forced-ads.php

The first one on that list, at a casual glance, appears to have better specs than E-Rice.

That was my point anyway. Smile

If you prepay for 12months its exactly $10/month ($120/year) for 10gb bandwidth and 2981mb of storage.
