hi folks,
a quick note about the forums, seems like its slowed down like crazy lately. Thats because of a downgrade in the DSL line its running on. I'll look into if its possible to make it a bit faster, if not i may need new hosting. I'd asked if there were any hosting possibilities awhile ago and someone had replied, but at the time i opted to just stick with what i had. But now if anyone has a fast server available for this let me know.
Other than that things are figuratively slow here lately too apparently,. i havent had a chance to visit in a long time (preparing for e3 took up every minute i had everyday for a long time) ....so i've been a terrible host. Been thinking about the future of these forums, and current thinking is leaning towards taking it down for a hiatus and not coming back until a faster server is found, and i can devote quality time here. CAUSE we all know how good i've been at following up on things like getting new moderators
I started these forums and have continued to keep them here as a place where art can be shared and questions can be asked and as long as it was helpful to people i'd thought to leave them up, but lately i get the feeling this place it on life support in spite of the wonderful effort my 2 moderators have put in....and probably because of the fact that i haven't been more involved.
So i guess my point is, i'd love to continue these forums, but i'd really like this to be a much better place as it used to be a couple years ago and there are some drastic changes that need to take place before this happens. Reply with your thoughts on the survival on Sijun.com and if you'd even like to see it come back if i take it down.
AND: If you have a server that would be able to host (for free ) let me know....the traffic generated here isnt super huge even during its peak back in the day....
peace,

First, i wanna hijack this thread and congragulate you on the success of Half Life 2. You must be dirty rich by now.
Secondly, there's nothing wrong with this forum lately other than the blazing Turtle Type-R SE speed. Keep the forum the way it is. _________________ Join Roundeye SECRET art forum shhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! |

The pooheads talk....(sorry Bang )
Life support, pffffht, what are you talking about?!
Sijun is unique. In the way people interact, in who's posting and so forth. I for instance do not post on other forums, merely look.
Sijun is the mother of all artforums as far as I'm concerned. Not because of quality, not because of the people, but because of it's "ways".
Dunno, I'm rambling, but DO keep the forums online!
Life support, pffffht, what are you talking about?!

Hello
I think the main reason for that the posting lately has decreased is because of the speed.
This forum has been very important to me and I am online on the forum many times a day.
What I would like to see in the forum and what I think would be cool:
*We could have a member of the week, the member who is the member of the week could have his link to his homepage as a sticky in one of the gallerys.
*I also suggested Weekly Themed Threads earlier when we started Draw Club, I would like to have Weekly Themed Threads where each topic is voted for every week. I think many people would participate in those.
Well those are just some ideas.
Compared to other forums Sijun is surely the best Forum in the Universe so if you are taking it down I would surely like to have the forum back.
Thank you
Matthew |

Im with BANG. No, literally Im WITH him... so BACK OFF!
@Matthew - I dont think D is asking for suggestions on how he or mods can be even MORE involved from the tone of the post. no offence.
@all - isnt Glines' board publicly (sic) supported? His pop ups used to be CRAZY but I think they all pitched in and covered his cost to clear the pop ups. ..
Nevermind - I checked his site as I typed this. Thats INSANE MONEY...

The best thing about this thread is it will go on for the next 8 months. My greatest fear is if you taker her offline we will all be deprived of Spooge and the likes as they almost exclusively post here. Thats just not right.
Maybe ROB A can host SIJUN to complete his ART FORUM EMPIRE? ( GOD HELP US ALL!!!) |

yes the forum got less visitors because its very slow. But for gods sake DONT SHUT IT DOWN, please !!!!
i think this place means too much to too many people to let it die. I bet someone can help, anyone ? i can't do much :/ i planed to post my art here for the rest of my life so:
1. Dhabih: i understand you don't have much time but atleast check this thread once a week
2. If anyone got any solution say it as soon as possible or we are all doomed
I 100% if we will get a good host there will be ALOT more visitors _________________ portfolio | art blog |

Dhabih: I'm certainly not one of the oldest members of the forum, but I've been here for a few years now. It's certainly changed from when I first registered here, but the essentials haven't really changed. We still have cool art here, we still attract the best talent, we're still open to the best answers to academic, schooling and portfolio questions and we're haplessly free of in-jokes etc. which seem to plague the smaller forums and make newcomers feel unwelcome. I think Sijun at the moment is currently on a winning recipe. There are some of the most awesome pics being posted in the community threads (speed painting, self portraits, propellor thread etc.). The big names are still posting here and newcomer's aren't afraid of posting their art here in order to get good quality critiques and help. The improvement that many of the artists here have made is phenomenal, and that's an understatement.
It might be helpful to give members here an opportunity to contribute to the running costs of the forum. I know that I would be prepared to help contribute to the running of the forum, as I've had a lot in return and learnt alot from the community for posting here. |

Umm.. odd, Dhabih isn't saying that he is concerned about the number of visitors. By slowing down, he meant the actual speed of the forum. I'm pretty certain Dhab couldn't care less about increasing traffic. In fact, i'm sure he'd like to have capped it a few thousand members beack.
Edit: I also agree with what ceenda just said. This place has contributed to the growth of literally thousands of artists. I'm sure many of whom would gladly help keep Sijun online if given the opportunity. Like ceenda, I'd be happy to help. I'm sure there are tons more, too. |

well it seems like the main problem lately is the speed of the forums, so i'll look into fixing that first and formost. My point with taking it down was just to see if after a breather things can start up good again, but if you guys like how things are maybe all thats required is a little more involvement on my part. anyway, keep discussin, i'm getting good feedback
thanks for the link to that post AndyT i was wanting to find that but couldnt find it originally. (ok, i actually didnt look..i just assumed i couldnt find it) _________________ http://www.sijun.com/ |

Dhabih Can you get some figures on how much trafic this site generates? If it is fairly small I have a deicated box that I might be able to run the forums of temporarally. A better solution would be for a whole bunch od us to club together and get a nice server somewhere. I am sure there are a lot of people here who are fed up with crappy hosting of their art sites and wouldn't mind haveing a nice dedicated server to share with this forum. If the trafic is not to high I can set up a test forum this weekend until people come up with a better solution.

Yea, some bandwidth figures would help me too, Dhab. I have a few contacts at some large hosting companies from design work I've done for them in the past. Provide me with some numbers to arm myself with, and I'll gladly pitch this to them.
And, I think, greater involvement on your part could only make things better. You seem to be almost a myth to some of the newer members. A LOT of people appreciate what you've done for the digital art community in starting and fostering Sijun. I think those people would love to get the opportunity to interact with, and learn from that person. Not only that, but I'm dying to see some of your recent stuff. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

There is one very simple solution--give Sumaleth admin power so he could add new moderators, look for a new host, implement changes to the forum..etc.
It's kind of like, if you're a dad that makes promises, but is too busy too keep them to the children, then let mom carry out those tasks instead, while you keep busy at the office. Make sense? |

PLEASE dont take the forum down this forum is like a legend, and cuase that it cant just die.
this are only a few but heck there are more great artits in this forum than in most of the net i hope sijun lives forever.

Yea the forum could do with a boost in speed, but im quite happy with the content the the forum is producing. Samuleth is doing a great job with draw club and the posting levels have eased, now not being so overly intensive, which is nice.
Anyway Dhab dont pull the plug, we can handle a bit of a speed decrease for the moment.
hope you work something out, _________________ Design portfolio |

I don't think anyone would mind the temporary slow-down too much, and besides most of the heavy image-content is hosted elsewhere. _________________ It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice - Scooter |

I would hate to see Sijun go down, even temporarily. I like to come here for the speedpainting thread and to browse the gallery. Also, there's a few people I only really talk to on here, and I'd fall totally out of touch with them if Sijun went down.

I also agree with giving Sumaleth admin powers. I think that over the course of 4 years he has more than proven himself trustworthy of shouldering that responsibility, Dhab. You *ARE* quite busy, and you *ARE* absent at times, but Sumaleth is always here. Always has been. |

All I've got to say is this warning. One of my favorites sites went down for a hiatus and to update software and page design. 2 years later, it's still not back up.

I check Sijun more than my email. A new host might be nice though; try setting it up in tandem with this one and then switch the post data when you're ready to go live. Just please don't make me go back to reading about how I can buy low cost Viagra online and all those sad Russian Brides who want to pleasure me.

Dhabih: I am a Sijun forum addict. This place is my browser start page and I hope to keep it that way for a long time. I really believe in Sijun forums and would be like a cocain junky going cold turkey if this place went down. Ive learned more about art here in the 3 or 4 years Ive been here than any other time in my life.
I still think you should put a couple more moderators in (Im still willing to apply for being a moderator) and give Sumaleth admin rights etc. Im totally fine with the slowness for now.
Just please do not take this place down.
.....please. |

Oh man! NO way can you take down sijun!! No! no! nO! PLEASe no!
This is where I live! You gonna make me somekind of interent hobo?
I mean, okay so slow is bad, but stopped (ie. offline) is surely worse.
I'd rather have this forum running at modem speeds than have it gone entirely.
I think I'm gonna sleep infront of my computer
No, seriosuly, There're lot of similar/related forums on the net but sijun is way the best, I mean, WAY the best, so much better than all the others. By stopping you'd just be turning people unhappily away to someother lousy forum. |

Lunatique - I asked that question to Sumaleth and offered to help him out with some moderating thou I wouldnt be a good mod, but I wanted to help out. He told me that there wasnt so much to moderate anyway so I guess the main issue right now is the speed issue.
