i always wondered how you guys do it (is there any place i can learn matte techniques?)... and why you do it.
for instance couple of the matte paintings could have just easily been shot during the night. but instead you hadta make it look like the evening from a day-time shot. things like that make me wonder, do people like peter jackson and others just like wasting money on things like that.
not like its a waste... keeps us all employed... but just makes me wonder if it werent easier to shoot during the time youd want the finished piece to look like.
keep up the great work! _________________ Life is a sexually transmitted disease. |

Hi all. Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot. Unfortunately, with work, I don't know how often i will be able to post here. Let's see if I can answer any questions...
hwslut-no I do not work with Loki. He was a texture painter here that did a couple matte paintings. he is now back at Digital Domain, last I heard.
the_insider-No I do not meet any actors, their work is long since done by the time I touch it, though when I was working on A Sound of Thunder doing concept work I got to meet everyone because they were shooting. no i was not in the art of Two Towers because I did not work on it. Return of the King is my first LOTR film.
dr.bang- I have no idea
Molako_plus-As far as a place to learn matte techniques, just look at nature and be observant. Learn photoshop inside and out. I think the Academy of Art in San Francisco i sactually offering classes in digital matte painting. It's all about color and composition. Detail comes later.
Also, the reason they often use day for night is that it is very difficult to photograph at night and also directors change their minds. An over cast day darkened down to night with a few lights always looks great because you retain the detail in the darks. When you photograph night you have blown out lights and minimal detail in the dark areas.
Thanks again,
Happy Painting! _________________ Dylan

Great work man. Welcome to Sijundell, Frodo, err, Dylan Cole. I know you'll have fun if you get to hang out - beginners, people just starting to get allright at painting(like me), and even people who are really very talented and successful with their 2d art like Spooge Demon(Craig) learn from everyone here, have fun doing art not in our usual styles, and help teach everybody else when we have time. So again, welcome, and I'll look forward to seeing your work in ROTK.
PS: Just watched the spaceship crash movie. That's gotta be the strangest workflow I've ever seen. :] But hey, with results like that, who can argue? ![Razz](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) _________________ -Anthony
