It seems most of the members of this board are pro artists, so this is definately the place to ask. I am a design artist who has learned to make art be learning to manipulate the limitations of Photoshop. This is somewhat of an inverse to most people who already know how to make and merely use Photoshop to make it more quickly.

Anyways.. I feel like I have gotten to a point of near mastery in the usage of Photoshop's layers, channels, and texturing. I have also been researching lately the hardware limitations of the software. As a result I have spoken with the world's leading authority on memory bandwidth a few times to learn the world of memory bandwidth intensive systems for creating art at resolutions of 6000x9000 pixels or higher. This authority is Dr. John McCalpin of SGI and IBM.

It seems I cannot get hired to create hardware systems for Photoshop because I am not an educated engineer. It seems also I cannot get an art job, because I am not a "traditional artist". Would any of you know of any art jobs fields for somebody who is a mere worthless design artist?

I don't know for sure, because I don't work in that industry, but what about video games? A lot of them use designy stuff for character sheets, interfaces, and so forth. A lot of people seem to work in that industry around here, so maybe one of them can give you more information.

You could do high-end web design too--you know, sites with cool interfaces, neat-looking buttons, and so forth--do you know Flash or PHP or anything?

I'm gonna decompile PhotoShop and rewrite it in QBASIC. I'll add a shortcut for naked Anna Kournikova

Cheney, I think I am seeing a bit of a pattern here. I understand this is a frustrating business, and have my own experiences and sympathize. Still, by adopting a label such as "Worthless designer," even if someone used that exact phrase to describe you, can only hurt you. The pattern I am seeing is that you accept the worst of what you hear. In your filters thread, you only hear the negatives regarding filters, and none of the "use them if they work" comments.

I don't know what obstacles you have personally been up against, but do all you can at your end to better your odds. Know your prospective clients needs, and approach only those who use (or possibly could use) the type of work you do. If a client wants figure paintings, your reception will be poor. If a client wants a designer with strong design and rendering skills, you should do well.

Also keep in mind that art is one thing you are selling, the other is yourself. If you can present a more cheerful and optimistic attitude, you will be someone the client wants to work with. Good luck!
