Hi
I've used both Painter and Photoshop and for me, photoshop just feels better, but the brushes in painter are so much cooler. I was looking at Wacom's site and saw a tutorial on painting with the art history brush. at the end of the tutorial it shows an image and it says underneath

"Here's a close-up on part of Jack Davis' finished piece. If you'd like to try your hand at getting impasto brush strokes like Jack's, check out his Photoshop 5.5 Wow! book-- it's available at www.peachpit.com."

here is the site http://www.wacom.com/tips/tip.cfm?ID=32&STEP=7&category=Photoshop

this is back when photoshop 5.5 was new, so i'm assuming now it would be a lot easier to get that look now, but i cannot figure it out. i'm basically wondering if anyone knows of a good way to get that look or something similar to it in photoshop. i've not been able to get that impasto look in photoshop. any help would be great! thanks

I've not read that particular book, but knowing what the "Wow" books are like it will be a combination of filters and/or selection tricks.

I had a quick go at replicating it, just by painting on a layer that had "bevel and emboss" applied in the layer effects, you can have several layers to get more layers of impasto strokes. I think it's fairly close, but in your example they've also added a canvas texture which I've skipped.
