I just got painter 7. the school's computer has it, and when i use the tablet to draw, all flat brushes face the direction the cursor is moving. but here on my home computer instead it just moves like the flat brushes in photoshop, only facing one direction... how do i get it right? thanks. |

Hi,
Painter's dab based brush variants paint small dabs, either close together to form the appearance of a continuous brushstroke, or spaced out so the dabs show, depending on the Spacing setting in the Brush Controls palette's Spacing section. This is opposed to Painter's Rendered brushes that paint a continuous stroke without dabs. Dab based brush variants can be set so the brush dab rotates as we paint in one direction or the other. That's probably why the brush variants you have at school are rotating to follow the direction of the brushstroke.
You'll find information/instructions for setting brush variants to rotate the angle of the brush dab in the Painter 7 User Guide, Chapter 8 Customizing Brushes, the section named "Setting Angle Controls.
Be sure to read the whole section as you'll need to make setting adjustments in more than one section of the Brush Controls palette, especially the Angle section and Expression section's Angle drop down list (see the sub section named "Angle Range").
Another thing you might do that will help you understand what's going on is to write down the settings for the flat brush variants you have at school, that rotate to follow the direction of the brushstroke.
In case they're not in their default state and/or were not saved as custom variants, be sure not to restore them to their default settings before taking notes. They might revert to being like the brushes you have at home. (Brush variants are restored to their default state in the Brushes palette's Variant menu by choosing Restore Default Variant.)
Note especially the exact settings you find in the following sections in the Brush Controls palette:
General
Size (also note the brush profile icon)
Spacing
Angle
Expression
Use Ctrl/Command+2 to toggle the Brushes palette open or closed.
Use Ctrl/Command+7 to toggle the Brush Controls palette open or closed.
The Painter 7 User Guide is accessible from inside Painter 7 via Help > Help Topics.
Good luck,
