I am experimenting with markers and I am using these drawings made by Feng Zhu. What I am using is Letraset Tria markers and I have a Cool Gray 3-T, a Cool Gray 5-T and a Cool Grey 9-T and I think I need a darker grey tone. I am not satisfied with the results and I haven't any info or tutorials on using this medium and it's pretty weird sometimes.
In case the image doesn't load: http://spiralarchitect.freewebspace.com/images/try1.jpg
This is my first try, using small strokes and lots of 3-T tone. I think this needs some darker tones. In my awful attempt to make smooth gradients I made the whole image to be dominated by a similar grey by overusing 3-T and 5-T grey and it flattens the forms I guess.

Here I retried, keeping plenty of white space and not caring too much to be careful and making gradients. Haven't finished it as I don't really know how to proceed.

The same goes with this guy. I'm not quite sure how to proceed but I do need to add some light grey at certain areas (I think) but I'm out of 3-T grey.
I'd really apreciate some feedback of any info on how to use markers. Mind you that the original inks aren't made by me but by Feng Zhu, a cool artist. This is his website http://www.artbyfeng.com/, I hope it isn't illegal to use his stuff to experiment and post it or anything. |

You did pretty good job with shading these. I like how you did the arm in the 3rd pic.
I think 2nd and 3rd are more effective, since they have stronger highlights and shadows to define the forms, and not having to spend more time on carefully making the gradients is a plus, since speed should be important when you do conceptual sketches.
sorry couldn't help with techniques for markers, hope someone else experienced can. |

Thanks for the crit. To tell you the truth, I like the way I did the arm in the 3rd image too. Still though I feel that images aren't quite complete. Sure, 2 and 3 have a more sketchey feel to them but I think more can (should) be done. I'm not quite sure how to carry on but I'm happy someone liked the way they looked. I guess I should try again. |

No worries, Spiral, "Fair Use" law provides for using graphics "for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research" http://cll.inherent.com/practice/intellectualproperty/copyrights_bg.cfm |
