Okay I am not going to touch the lineart anymore... its done and done and can be found here:
http://sherman3d.net/jonathan/theruins.jpg
I can see there are some issues with the lineart such as angles on perspective on the stone blocks. Which I can see, but can't be bothered fixing until later.... but something else is bothering me about the piece. I think its directional lighting.
The direction of light is supposed to be fairly high and to the right of the viewers position... any problems there?
What I want to work on more are the colors. Now here is a progress shot.... I can see some areas that need a bit of work... but please reiterate on any problems you see in the colors if you find anything. I am eager to improve.
C&C welcome also.

Well the link and image wasn't loading but now it is.
Lineart looks cool as well ass the painted peice but one suggestion if its supposed to be a statue head (am I right?). It appears too smoothe to be an ancient stone ruin of a head, needs more jaggeds and cracks here and there maybe. As for directional lighting you can try the links at the end because what seems simple takes me a page to explain about lighting (because there is alot to talk about especially bouncing about light).
However I have found over time that actually DRAWING your light source (the direction of it... which side it his on the object first, etc) when you don't have a reference, this helps out alot... even if you have to extend your canvas a lil more
Also try to avoid having black lines seperating things... especially the corners of those blocks that you have there. In real life it would be shades and even color seperating things but there would be no black lines on each corner of those. (I know you aren't done with it or anything yet but I am just pointing things out as I see things right now so don't take it too hard).
Also don't put shadows up until you know where your light is going to come from (it causes alot of problems later... sometimes easy to correct but more for me it was a big pain). Think of the surfaces and the amount of reflection coming off of them (how much light it will pick up from wherever). For instance if the brown in the painted pic is dirt or even roots of a gone once was tree (or some alien thing growing) would it have such intense light on it? or more subtle.
It looks pretty cool though, with just a few things you can do to fix it up more (I know your not done ). Just keep working on it and don't forget to post updates on your progress. I like the sketch though.
BTW did you use references? Is it based off a certain civilization in the past?
Oh almost forgot the links to tutorials for more directional lighting/castshadows etc.
==http://www.anticz.com/drawing1.htm for directional lighting, cast shadows, shadows, shading, etc
=And
A link that is helpful for lighting and cast shadows on simple objects as well as shading. A little hard to understand at first.

Thanks Xyster21! Thats good advice... reading the cube thread was very helpful in understanding some fundamentals I'd forgotten.
Now I think I'll reapproach the lightsource dilemma somewhat.
Its not supposed to be any civilisation in particular... just a sketch I did and liked enough to take it into the next stage. Yeah cracks and stuff will be added later I want to get the basics down first though.... the simpliest stuff 1st. Because its the simplest stuff that I mess up.
I'll try get another progress shot out on the weekend. Uni is a bit full-on at the moment... _________________ I could be an arse and write long signatures but I won't! |

I am not going to change the lighting on the head all too much... but I am now doing everything really small and detailed. I like the progress so far.
Any C&C, I've only played with the face so far.. I have to do a lot of work on the bricks and stuff. I added cracks and stuff to the face...

It's looking better Bjon
just keep fiddling with those cracks a little more. Maybe making them more random and more jagged n rough.
I still don't like the lighting on the head that much (just too bright for it I think) but it's looking better though and nice detail you have going _________________ Meep meep |
