Hey guys.

I'll put it bluntly: I don't know how to color using Photoshop. I really don't, and the fact I dont have a tablet doesn't help either. So I asked around and everyone told me smudging is the way to go, so I gave it a shot and ended up with this ..

I'm not satisfied with it at all.. I think it looks way too dirty and unclean, but it's the best I could do.

I would really like some pointers, and after I get them, try to recolor it completly.. hope some of you will still like it though.

Here's a version with some black outlines showing, to give the picture a more defined look ..

Click here to see it without the outlines, if anyone's interested.

Thanks in advance.

the way to go is to use only the paintbrush tool. then read all the painting tutorials you can, for real or digital. If you want to be able to reliably paint things in the long run you gots to learn the skills.

personaly I hate using the smudge tool...
I'd try making realy clean edges/lines with either the paint brush tool, or the air brush..(pretty much personal preference, pluss it depends on what you want your picture to look like.... everyones got their own personal style)
I'd use the air brush, because you can blend stuff easier with it..(still personal preference though)

the biggest problem you have is the edges are very blurry, don't be afraid to use the eraser tool.. (at a lower opacity)
another thing is that your image looks pretty flat, even with the shading you got,..its not realy enough... try doing studies with pictures(ones with lots of contrast in the lighting.) that will help you make your stuff look more realistic...

oh and try to get a tablet, they do help alot, and they don't cost very much...
