Yeah Traditional stuff!!!

Never posted much art in here before. 1) Don't use my tablet much, haven't grown 'comfortable' with it yet, and 2) been busy with school! I'm in art fundamentals at Sheridan College and am applying to their animation program next year. Here's two pieces I've done in school I'll most likely be putting in my portfolio:

Hand Study - acrylic on 10x15 illustration board

Life Drawing - 15 mins, Conte on 18x24 newsprint

*Never practiced much with full tonal studies in life drawing. I think the core shadow on the leg is a little strong, but eh..*

Figured I've been around long enough without showing anything myself, so there we go! Comments/Crits totally welcome

yes very nice, love the blue light coming in on the hand painting.

Just by chance, do you have any art from before you started Sheridan? I applied to art fundamentals and I am kicking my ass right now trying to get up to par with what I suspect the other students are doing.

I have already heard a lot of good stuff about the program but just to make sure - There ARE free life drawing sessions that you can go to outside of normal class during the week? I sure hope so. And its a fairly formal art education, as in you aren't going to have a teacher who puts a sealed up box in the middle of the room and tells everyone "paint what you THINK is inside the box" Then the kid next to you gets naked and paints with his dick an orange spot on a white canvas then gets an A because he is so "deep"

I just want to get my ass kicked, is that too much to ask?

-Thanks

Hey atomic-great images. They have a great sense of volume. What I would say is, Structure, concentrate on what is happening more carefully, tehn the image will look even more incredible. I have done a draw over to give you some thoughts about what you are seeing. I have delineated the planes by separating them by color. Each colored plane indicates a different influence of light and shadow.
Another thing to keep in mind: no two fingers are equally parallel to each other, they each have a slight angularity to them, as I noted in one of the drawings.

Anyway, keep up the life studies, its where you grow the fastest in training your eye...at least when you have a decent instructor to help guide you along...

have a great one, and keep painting...Smile

Wow! After I had created this post it went off the first page with no replies Sad so I didn't bother checking it again! But yeah this is awesome, thanks for the replies, I expected I wasn't getting any! Anyway I'm here to answer some questions, sorry I haven't replied sooner

I been really busy this week, and BOOM! Good News! handed in my Portfolio last monday and just found out on friday the results: I made it into the animation program, WOOHOO!!! I'm so happy. I got really plastered on friday night with my classmates who also got in Laughing

Anyway!

SolarC: Thanks. I really only have traditional stuff and my scanner is so small It's hard to scan most of it... but I'm gonna start working on a website this summer

xXxPZxXx: I will tell you, straight up... Before September '02, I have nothing good to show you. I didn't know what the hell was going on before I got in the program. I mean, sure I studied some of Loomis' books so I had the upper hand in my drawing and painting classes in some cases, but I had NO, repeat, NO life drawing experience before this year. If I showed you my life drawings from my first week of school, you'd want to puke. I swear! However, all the animators I talked to at school told me if I wanted to get in the program, I had to do as much life drawing as I could. SO, for the past 4 months, I've been doing at least 15 hours of extra life drawing on top of my regular classes here... and man, I am so happy I did. The improvments have been insane, and when I got that nice 'congratulations' in my interview on friday, it was AALLLLL worth it! If you are practicing hard now, lemme tell you, you will have the upper hand on most students. There are a lot who have little experience, and then some who have good experience. But it's really how serious your attitude is IN the program which decides where you end up. For example, I've gotten to know about 10 other guys really well who are in the fundies program that came to life drawing as much as me. We all watched each other improve throughout the year and all expected eachother to make it into animation... and we did! Oh yeah... as far as formal training goes... yes. A LOT if not ALL studying from life. Flat out, hardcore, back to the basics training is what you get at this school. It's one of the reasons why Sheridan produces such talents artists. Basics is what a lot of people lack. If you want you ass kicked, get ready! And have fun!

Fred: You rule! I've seen some paintovers of yours before, this is great! I totally know what you're getting at here. I think I did a good job blocking in the index finger but the others behind it seem kinda sloppy. And so true about the fingers not being parallel, I didn't even think or consider that. Thanks man!

Damn, this reply seems pretty long.. Oh well! I'm on a high right now! Laughing Laughing Laughing
