I'm not a great realistic painter, but from what i've taken in from experience, I'll just spill my guts..
1. People use: Procreate's Painter, and Photoshop. That's basically your best bet. There are other programs out there, like Open Canvas, VBrush, etc. but then again, for your choice in realistic painting, I'd go with Photoshop or Painter.
2. Using a reference: References are great for realistic painting, and as you become more experienced with them, you don't find the need to copy them, but to use them as a guide. Alot of inexperienced artists paintover, as I did for practice when i started out, and change their style as they experience. I'm not much of a ref. user, but this is just a general statement. Tracing an outline is a halfassed cheat. I just suggest practice, until you attain your basic idealistic view on shapes and light, etc..
3. I don't take art classes, and I don't plan on taking them. Still, not bragging, I'm pretty damn good...for my age, and stuff but whatever suits you. I don't like being told how to learn, it's like walking in someone elses footsteps for me. But that's just my approach on things. Classes can and probably will benefit you in your basic art style and such. But if you're more intrapersonal, you may benefit from books even more.
4. Lets say you are taking colours from the dropper tool from the reference, that's just restricting yourself isn't it. Don't think of it as a cheat, cause that's kinda discouraging, instead thing of it as a straight jacket or something, like handcuffs or ropes tied to your feet, holding you back from opening your eyes and making something your own. Again, this is just my thinking, everyone works differently.
This is one of the first things I digitally made, at the age of 13:
Now, almost a year later, something I made pretty recently:
Both images were done without reference, but the flower in the second one I pencilled first using a real life rose.
Hope that helps.. _________________ girls like shining |

you use what ever software you feel is good.
Quote: |
you can have all the software the best tablet and the biggest fastest computer and still come out with less than "good" artwork. With or without a mouse principles of art and ALOT of practice tends to back up alot of an artist work. Even soem free painting programs come out with great stuff you still need the knowledge of the program just as you would the knowledge of a charcoal pencil or pen & ink..it comes with time which turns to skill in which can further your drawings inorder to get what you want out of them not what your software can produce or mouse and tabelt can...you need an artist or a person wanting to be one to use these principles otherwise they are usless....but thats just what I think...... |
I think you should most definitly take art classes if you want to build on your talent. When you take these classes they teach you things and show your eyes something that i ignored before i stepped in the class. Online drawing/painting is based alot on offline talent using tradtional media backed up with art education... this link might help you out...
Lots of stuff
keep your drive to learn more but sometimes a link will not be handy to help you out in the class with your brush...but thats what i think

I'm just one ppl... here's how I'd answer the 4 questions.
1.what software do u use? (i herd alot of ppl using painter, y?)
Photoshop almost exclusively.
2.when u "copy" a realistic ref, how do u keep proportions? (is it ok to trace outline over the actual ref? hehe)
Tracing is a tool. It is useful for certain jobs and totally inappropriate for others.
3.are u ppl taking art classes or took b4?
I went to art school... long time ago...
4.are u taking the colors with the dropper tool o the ref?
I've never found that to be a useful technique. _________________ HonePie.com

1. what do i use: painter 6.1, opencanvas 1.1
2. i keep proportions by looking at the ref, then looking back at the screen etc... no tracing involved. when tracing, i feel like cheating myself that's why i leave it alone. i have no prob with people feeling comfortable tracing, though.
3. i never took art classes... i had lifelong traiuning, though. i held a pencil before i could walk.
in fact, i'm searching for some lifedrawing classes but they are damn hard to find in germany around my home.
4. no, no eyedropper. an eyedropper duplicates color, that's not what i want. i want to paint something that LOOKS like the ref not something that is a COPY of the ref. some colors need to be muted or pushed in a different directiion, pulled out more etc... to make it work as a painting. read fred flick stone's posts about color. they are great. |

Take the six main colors and then mix all others by yourself |
