http://ntvdm.cjb.net

^ emulates sound blaster cards, general midi (roland, mpu401), joystick port, etc etc. it's pretty much a ms dos emulator. you can fix up your own config.sys and autoexec.bat by which it will then run the games. even has sorta working vesa and ipx support. it's quite cool. and be sure to grab the vdmlaunchpad or your configurations will be a nightmare..

haven't tried anything else than tie fighter (collectors' cd, *pat*) and privateer/righteous fire with it so far but at least they work, no problems at all. joystick, midi, sb16 sounds, mouse, cd, etc. and unlike vmware, vdmsound is free..

i could tell many horror stories about my crusades into vmware and how i never managed to even get dos6.22 or freedos installed on it (but i did successfully install mandrake9, vmware for that and win95 for that vmware.. got bored, running three operating systems on top of each other takes resources, and the slowness.... vmware isn't exactly top performance.) because of the obscure fdisking/formatting procedures inside a vmware .raw image :|

it's probably old news but for those who aren't aware of this program.. it'll save you from much sweat and hatred.

like buying a 486 for 5 euros, just to spend 4 hours battling with win95/isa nic's, giving up a day later (though i did complete privateer and righteous fire in about 20 hours of playtime, got over 1 million of money by the time i had bought the best of the best for the centurion and a jump drive so i could get out of Troy..)

yadda dadda..

oh, anyone know of _any_ way to get a sb live to work in a dos6* or freedos environment? (yeah, desperate, i know.)

Isn't there a way without the bootdisk? I've been trying to run Full Throttle on WinXp and the only problem is the sound. I will try it with the bootdisk, but it would be nice to be able of playing it without rebooting each time.

Oh, and faust, Tie Fighter is one of the best games around Star Wars I've ever played. Why they don't do something similar with the new episodes? Or with the old, but I'd like to play a new game like the old Tie fighter (Or X-Wing)

There's also http://dosbox.cjb.net which seems to emulate the old SB16 quite well. Was playing oldies like DUNE2 and the FM MIDI etc seems to be quite good.

You can get nice non-choppy sound in Full Throttle with VDMSound at least it worked nice for me. You can find it here http://ntvdm.cjb.net/ , just right-click the game exe after installing it and choose "run with vdmsound" and it should all work fine.

yeah i was plaing full throttle last week on xp with VDMSound and worked for me too.

it is a known fact that full throttle and grim fandango will have big problems with sound under xp without any additional programs.
