Does anyone know why it sometimes defaults to *.bmp when you try to save images from internet explorer?

Yeah, it's a bug that's been in there for a while. Once you kill off the cache, try rebooting too. I've gone to setting my cache settings to the smallest size which seems to help too. Don't bother upgrading to IE 6 either, it still has the bug.

Refresh the page(F5) can make the original filename come back. my guess was IE only remembers a number of file names, so after opening several pages IE removed earlier image names from its cache.

The bug is a cache error, not a file name or refeshing problem. Once it becomes corrupt you're hosed. If you get the properties on the image I'm willing to bet it shows as a -1 byte file and you won't be able to save it properly in it's native format. Windows just defaults to the .bmp format on the dialogue since it's confused.

Cool, thanks. I tried those measures, and had some sporadic luck. Guess it's just built in Microsoft goodness.

Thanks for the helps!

I noticed it too

But I also noticed that here, in Sijun, when saving images from certain people it happens and with others it doesn't. It's weird...

Whenever I come across an image that wants to save as BMP I just drag it to the FlashGet (download util) dropbox and get it that way.
