hi there,

i just want to know what i really need to start, whats more important to have at startup a good scanner or a drawtablet?(should cost ~100/$)

i thought about to try some anime/mangastuff or just comicstyle(clear lineart) like spawn comics and so on but also i like those arts of craig mullins very much.

if i try sth in photoshop its very difficult with a mouse (even its a very precise one, MS3.0) and i like it much more to draw with pencil but i dont know how to work on such pics like

without a drawtablet or sth. (forgive me that i post it here, just that u know what i mean...) -> this picture was made by craig mullins! taken from goodbrush.com

have really no idea to start in photoshop, what size such a work need, airbrush?, how big must the aibrush be etc.

i already read a few tutorials but in none stand how to start in ps, size, brushtyp ...
and was somehow too unexact, so not for a starting newb.

hope u can help a newb.

regards r1sm and sry for bad english

You should probably try that approach. Use the biggest possible normal round brush. Maybe start with copying photos first.

You can start with a mouse btw.You can still buy a tablet later if you don't lose interest.
This stuff for example was done with a mouse and without lineart. And my mouse sometimes refuses to move the brush vertically. It's just not that convenient.

If you think you don't want to copy photos anyway you can take other's lineart and color it.
My advice is hang out here for a while and read the threads especially in the Digital Art Discussion.
Hopefully you'll find out what it takes to come up with pictures like the one you posted.
Buy a tablet or a scanner when you know more precisely what you want.

yeah i know nobody can start fine without alot of pracctising, but its nice to know what i shall use for such a pic i have posted above.
i saw some pics + tuts where the painter used 3500x3000 size and read this even in forumthreads. but if i start with some misshapen blots, im often abit angry about myself cuz it looks like sh*t in contrast to all other works nevermind how good they are Surprised

and what shall i buy for a scanner? saw some really nice looking typs by HP, Canon, Mustek, Acer and Epson, but whats the main factors of a good scanner for digital stuff?

maybe anyone can say me what painter7 is good for? "bought" it and was confused about the many functions, like the first time i used ps Smile

and is that possible to draw such pictures with mouse?

Read other threads. Did you even bother to read my reply? The question is not mouse, scanner or tablet. It's impossible to do craig mullins like stuff unless you spend the next 3 years drawing and painting about 5 hours each day I guess.

If you don't want to print the image you don't need to worry about the resolution. Just ask yourself how detailed you want it.
If you just want it to look ok as a wallpaper you can work in 1600x1200 for example.
If you just want to get more adept at using the PS/Painter7 tools you can even start with a lower resolution.
(BTW there's a 'how to make you life easier in Painter' thread)
You can try to fix the image if you can see why it doesn't look ok. Look at tutorial movies for example.

You should be able to see if an image you started has potential or not.
If you think everything you try looks crappy and you don't know why then read about shape, composition, perspective, color theory and so on ... and look at other artists paintings. Try copying photos without tracing and without the eyedropper tool.
And again...
Read other threads.

umm.. Almost imposssible I would think..

Wacom tablets are pressure sensitive.. and that helps aaaalot.. even if you have super control with a mouse it is still hard to get get different shades.. or transparency with a mouse.

get a $50 - $80 scanner if you intend tojust paint over line art.. and then get a Wacom Graphire 2 for $80 from newegg.com ... its not thee best wacom. but if you are on a tight budget then thats the best thing to do.

Education can be a shortcut to experience.. Go to amazon.com .. or barnes and noble.. and check out all the awesome books there. Read.. study .. study the world around you.. and practice like crazy.. and you will improve.
