Heh, I dont know if this fits into these forums but here goes.....
I have no artistic talent whatsoever, but I would like to get into sketching, and later on sculpting. I have no idea what I need to do to get started, or what I need to have. If some of you have any suggestions, could you post them here? Thanx alot!

if you live in US
go to your public library, see the art section and you will be amazed by the number of books you will find. Take as many drawing books as you can on your card. Read the basics in each one of them. I try too read as much info from each book as possible, because every book has different approach. Having usefull preliminary information will help you a lot. Then, you should work on your basics, to tell you the truth, it took me more than year to build up good basic drawing skills.
Also good advice to you. Learn Calligraphy, it will greatly improve your drawing skills(it will make your lines flow like water and will improbe handwriting + most important will help you strenthen line perception)
This book will help you a lot

1) Get Sketchbook
2) Find a subject with your eyes that you want to draw
3) Draw it
4) Repeat with new subjects 34986437567263874576273953 times
Books can help, but they do nothing without practice. When I started taking art seriously I bought a lot of books hoping to find some secrets or whatever. When it comes down to it, practice is everything. I don't regret buying my books, as I sometimes look to them for inspiration or tricks I can use. But if I had to start all over again, I'd just have grabbed a sketchbook and drawn non stop. Time is better spent drawing than it is sitting in a comfy chair reading a drawing manual, even though the latter is easier to handle. Everyone has a load of bad drawings in themselves, why not start getting rid of them now?
After a few weeks of non stop drawing, compare the new stuff with what you were doing a few weeks ago. You'll understand.
DO however pick up that book the above poster mentioned (Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain). It is invaluable to someone new to art.
Also, some advice some animators have told me. Treat every drawing like it has the potential to be a piece of trash. Sounds weird but let me explain. In animation people go through drawings by the thousands. Sheet after sheet of paper is thrown away as the animator tries to animate the scene. What this tells you is, don't be afraid to experiment. Always try something new. Whether is is how you start the drawing, to your shading technique, to even how you hold the pencil (or whatever you are using, try different materials too). Always experiment, and never think in your head 'I'm trying to make a good drawing'. If you have to, site down and think 'I don't care if this drawing turns out like crap'. Some of my greatest discoveries and improvments in my drawing have come from me just messing around with something different. A lot of it is in the mind. Stay relaxed, stay loose. |

First you need to get past that nonsense, perhaps it has been bottled up or you yourself have kept it from coming out but its there somewhere. Depending on many different factors it might take a long time to get it to come back out but it will happen.
quit saying you can't and just do it. First hurdle is over right there.
good luck and have fun
