I'm a... 17 years old artist who had never attended any art classes... therefore I'm forced to learn things all by myself. And yeah, I'm not that good.

I've tried CG-ing, and they all suck... except this last one. After about 4 months of never touching Photoshop, I tried my hand on it again, this time asking for advices from random people who've used them before.

So on this one, I tried using some real tiny brushes (2px seemed so big), not just cheap airbrush stuff... and abusing the smudge tool. Nothing else.

The pictures is a .txt file, if you can't see it, .jpg version here.
The real image is twice as big... and consists of 6 layers: Lineart, skin, lips, eyes, hair, and shirt. Shirt's the blue... oh sweatshirt, which is kinda untouched, yet.

I wanna ask...
1. Is the skin a bit too orange-ish? I might be a bit too used to Asian skin colour, since... I'm one.
2. Her lips colour... does it look kinda icky? Or looks natural and fine?
3. Does she look old? I think she does. Supposed to be between 9-11 years old on this pic.

Anyway, well, I'm not finished yet, so... feel free to comment. Just keep in mind that I'm still a crappy beginner, and might not understand if you talk about complicated stuff. Sorry! But er thanks for uh things, firstly.

--------------

And if you wanna see my old works... well. They are mostly done using oekaki (Japanese online paint program), unless they look too obvious to be pencil sketches.

Battle, July 2002
Boso, July 2002, the sort of thing I do when I get really bored.

Random Sketch, March 2002

And er yah, I'm probably the crappiest guy in here. So, sorry if I'm... crap.

17? Amazing!

I think the skin should actually look a little more pinkish but the current color doesn't look Asian IMHO.
I think it looks as if she had an enormous deltoid and as if she's wearing two wigs Wink
The chin seems strange. I guess it makes her look older.
My first impression was a good one. So maybe I'm wrong. Maybe these things don't need to be fixed.
I think your stuff could look better without the outlines. Define the shapes with tones/values instead.

And the eyes could do with more detail (shading) and overall it looks a little smudgy.

You want to know how others work in Photoshop? There are many tutorials.

For portraits this approach seems to be good:
