Ok, so I'm watching Oprah, right? And its about protecting your kids from hidden dangers. Why am I watching this? I don't have kids. But, I AM watching it. Apparently, the universe wants my head to explode.

A couple is on warning parents of the dangers of baby oil. Why? Because he let two 18 month old babies play together alone while he made dinner. No, he didn't just let them play together alone, but for some reason he thought baby oil would be a fun toy? Or.. I don't know. But he left them with a bottle of baby oil. Why? Do you leave your kids with soap? Or those butt wipes? Or lotion? Why is baby oil any different? So, naturally, not only are they surprise when one of the kids gets into the baby oil, but they are shocked beyond belief that baby oil is bad for the kid? Sure, ya don't expect it to kill them. I'll grant them that. But come on, what kind of idiot thinks smth like baby oil is harmless enough to leave it laying around to be ingested??

Tell me I'm not the only person on earth who would have the sense to put away the baby oil? Tell I am not the only person not surprised that baby oil is unhealthy to drink?

Actually, it wasn't the drinking. Apparently, he inhaled it and it coated his lungs. Which, I mean.. I don't know. It just seems like it more the parents fault and less the baby oil's fault. Which is what they're trying to do, blame it on the baby oil.

This kind of thing really hurts my head. And my heart. People who can't keep things like baby oil from babies shouldn't HAVE babies. Its common freakin' sense!

My reply:

I saw that one ages ago. Mom and I criticized it, saying basically what you did; that anyone in their right mind wouldn't leave their kids alone with crap like that.

There was another one...you know those little Chinese jelly candies, the one with the hard lump of something in them? If you don't know offhand, you've probably seen them somewhere anyway. They're fairly common. But anyway, they showed a bunch of cases where kids have died from eating them, because they got lodged in their windpipe and the paramedics couldn't pull them out. All the kids were under the age of 7. Some absolute idiot left their 2-year-old with one of them. Don'tcha think that was stupid? All the others were similar cases, the little kid is left alone with one, and chokes. I've eaten tons of those, never choked. Pfft.

Other cases, little kids have been left on beds just inside open windows, out of which they have fallen. Left in hazardous areas, have died. It's mostly the parents' own stupidity! A smart, responsible parent will keep their kids in check whenever possible, not to mention storing dangerous things, like cleaners and whatnot, out of reach of children, not leaving stoves on, etc. If you're too stupid to realize that, you shouldn't be a parent.

*sigh* How come I know how to keep a little kid out of hazardous materials, and I'm only 14ish (15 in February...), while all these people who have grown up, gone through high school, college, etc. don't!

ARRRGH!

Yeah! Exactly!

Those people whose kids fell out the window were trying to justify it by saying "Well, we didn't live in a high rise, so we didn't think it would ever happen to us."

Um ... DUH. If you live in a house that has MORE THAN ONE story, your child is in danger of falling out of an open window and dying. If your house has ONE story, I suppose it could still be possible, but they're probably more likely to just seriously injure themselves rather than die. And that's not good either. ahem.

Anyways ... BOO to stupid people like that!

Aaand my other reply:

Aand, I still have no idea how people can be so damn stupid.

I injured myself quite alot as a kid, but it all made me sensible of what i do, and what it can lead to.

If i didn't touch a hot stove, how would i know that it's bad to do it?

I didn't injure myself as a kid. I learned about a hot stove by watching kids like [Shizo] burn themselves.

I have a two year old and I am always watching her to make sure she doesn't get into anything. We have removed the silverware ware from the kitchen drawers, put all the cleaning agents in a high cabinet and we keep loose change out of reach. No matter how much you baby proof your home you still need eyes on the back of your head. Even the most common objects like a pencil or a piece of paper can be harmful if the baby is left alone with those items.

The problem with some of these negligent parents is that they do understand that when you have a baby you need to commit your time to your baby. Household chores and/or other things can wait until the baby goes to bed or the parents can switch off and take turns watching the baby.

Leaving a baby in a room unattended is just wrong. People like that piss me off.

Heh... That sounds so redundant.

They also went on about how they thought the screens (*laughs*) would stop any fall. Only thing that'll do it is BARS!!!

...in which the kid will get his head stuck in, or twist it's arm, or possibly ingest some way(they'll find a way...trust me...they always do...wether it's a cleaning agent or a buick...they'll swallow it.)

Oh, I remember a lovely story that was on the radio a while ago. It was part of a segment called, "Bad news put to happy music" which is a bunch of horrible digusting -yet always quite true - news put to childrens/religious songs.

Well...The story went as this:

Some child of about 3 years of age was left unattended at his home in Romania(or somewhere)...well, the kid wasn't left alone no more than 10 minutes, and when the parents got back they found a great mess. The kid was covered in blood and fur. Upon further inspection they realized that the child had managed to skin and EAT the cat with it's fingers. the child had completely devoured the entire feline except for some ligaments and it's bones.

Them parasitic babies are hell, I tell you. =)

I managed to get my hands on a rusty pen-knife when I was a kid. And yes, my thumb still has a huge scar on it. That said, we were at someone else's house when it happened.

Though the most impressive one was where I downed an entire bottle of Benylin cough mixture when I was a toddler and my Mum and my Aunt had to drive me to hospital with my Aunt jiggling me to keep me awake till we got there.

Dang. I still have a sweet tooth for Benylin...

As I don't have children I do have three neices and a nefew on the way. I have always been injured in some way or another. It is how I learn. As I don't think that I should let a kid play with a knife on the stairs in too long pjs. I do though think that because children are a stimulous driven machine that they have to learn the hard way. even pain. Not however i just god a rusty pen-knife and sliced my finger off. Just remember scares are tattos with great stories. There is such a thing as playing safe, getting hurt, and not dieing from it. I don't want to "baby" my children, a non sheltered house I will build.

So...each of my rat-scratch scars tells a story...yep. I had a rat climbing up my bare arms. *looks at legs* Bike pedals hurt.

I think the only thing I learned the hard way was not to step on a nail...oh, and not to get your finger wedged in a lawn chair. It hurts like hell when a nail goes through your foot, or when your fingernail gets ripped out of your finger.

After that, I was always extremely cautious. I've never broken a bone, or really been in a situation where I could, and, hell, I've never even had a cavity! But that wouldn't really be anything I could prevent, so...pheh. I think I'm mentally older than I am. Even though I can't believe I'm almost 15. Jeez.

Rambling...RAMBLING!! *sits down*

I'm a perfect example of why one should keep close watch on their children. At three years old I almost died because a penny got lodged in my throut and cut off my wind pipe. My mother litterally shoved her hand down my throat to remove it.
I sliced my finger tip off with an a razor when I was 8 years old and at 10 years old I got hit in the eye with a wooden clothes pin. I lost my vision in that eye. It was so badly damaged they had to remove it and give me a glass eye. (When I want to paint a closeup of an eye I can pop it out and use it as reference lol!)

Hey translucent, a friend of mine suffered the same kind of injury! (he lost his eye too, and now has a nice glass one).

Me, I fell down when I was a kid, and cutted my tongue in two. The best of it is that I said nothing, nor cried, and swallowed all the blood (the tongue is one of the parts of the body that stops bleeding soon, as it has a lot of...plaquetas in Spanish-those blood cells that coagulate injuries).

My mother was worried thinking: "How strange, this boy doesn't laugh, doesn't play, doesn't shouts...". When she was trying to make me eat my dinner I opened my mouth...and there was half of my tongue hanging from a tiny flesh thread to the other half. My tongue soon sticked together with the other half (no stitches needed, though a nice scar forever-my wife loves it ) but my mother almost suffered a heart attack.

bah translucent, that's sad
Learning from experience is good, but not when it goes beyond scars and scratches.
