Im trying to learn how to draw good concept images. If anyone has got any good information on what a good concept drawing should look like and/or contain, please post here.
Now to the image - any gfx crits or crits concerning the beasts anatomy and possibility to move and stuff like that are most welcome!
I know its not so origional... |

Know what I think?
I think a good cocpet image is one which portrays a concept in it's best light. if your painting shows your concnept of that beast as cool as it can be, then it's a good concpet painting. I wreckon that's all there is to it. Beyond that.. well every artist has their own way of making a concpet cool, no doubt dependant on the concept. Involving dramtic lighting/ dramtic camera angles/ settings.. you get the idea..
Statement of the obvious? common sense? yeah okay, but I'm an idiot, i like to state the obvious : )

I think it needs much more detail. You need to be able to see a solid, convincing form, surface details and color suggestions. The lighting and shadow should be articulated to show the musculature, hanging skin, and the rippling flag in the wind. Also, if you were presenting this to someone, having a 3/4 view would be nice to see the mass of the form instead of just a side view. Nothing is wrong with side views, but often I feel choosing another angle is going to be more dynamic and provocative.
So, what you have posted here would qualify as a very basic thumbnail sketch to work out basic forms for yourself. No problem with that at all to start, but you need to go much beyond this if you want to sell your concept to someone.
If you want to see what good concept art is, take a look at Feng Zhu's work at www.artbyfeng.com. If you are serious about concept art, then the closer you can get to his level of expression, the better. You probably don't need to be quite as good as Feng in order to get work, but you should sincerely try. |
