Hello
I have read a lot of different posts and threads and is often hearing that people are often up late and kind of has this insomnia thing going on. I am going to bed late at night and are often not sleeping that well. How are your sleeping habits?
Is Insomnia something that artists suffer from?
have a nice day

I've thought of this many times, as I really envy Leonardo's way of sleeping: just 15 minutes every 4 hours were enough for him.
I tried to sleep just 5-6 hours some time ago, but I failed, I felt tired.
Now I sleep 8 hours and feel really well, though sometimes I wish I could only sleep 4 or so to have more free tiem. _________________ _ _ _____ _ _

dunno what it's based on.. but some people insist that you have to sleep an event amount of hours e.g. 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.. otherwise it'll be bad sleep (wtf?) and you will wake up tired and angry no matter what. _________________ "hey, wanna dance?"

faustgfx - really ? I never heard that hmm interesting. Maybe that's where "getting on the wrong side of the bed" is from.
I used to be able to pull off a week with sleeping 2 or 3 hours per night but now I feel like I'm 97 and NEED to have at least 7 hours of sleep per night.
That said, I have a tendency to fall asleep really late no matter what.. even if forcing myself into going to bed early and getting early on an extended period of time it just won't work. I seem to function a lot better at night. The brain seems more lucid (???) or at least full of ideas.
I hate having to walk in to work on 8:45 slllleeeeeeeep
as for Leonardo.. no wonder he had so whacked up ideas I have to try that one out.... but naps make me feel all wonky.. _________________ -Aline

i sure know 1 hour of sleep gives me a headache and won't make me feel any better.. same with 3 hours, 4-5 hours is ok if i'm not too tired, anything beyond 7 hours i will wake up with nausea.. shrug.
and i can't sleep if i'm drunk. i'll get a hour or two of shut eye if i'm lucky but that's rare. being dead tired is really really horrible when yer completely blasted but still ....sane enough to realize you're dead tired. shudder. _________________ "hey, wanna dance?"

If I don't recall it badly, there are different phases when sleeping.
Something like hour and a half...
When I sleep around 7 and a half hours I feel ok, the same with 9. When I sleep 8 I wake up sleepy.
Sometimes with 6 I'm ok.
The other day I slept 4h and half and didn't feel really tired. Stayed awake and doing things for 11 hours... _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

Ive never suffered from insomnia.. I sleep like a log. |

i can't sleep before 3 or 4 in the morning. no matter when i decide to go to bed, i will lie awake until then.
concerning hours: 9hours are perfect, 8hours are horrible(tired/angry/unable to concentrate), 7hours are good as well. anything below 7 is not enough, everything beyond 9 keeps me tired the whole following day. right now i'm getting about 4hours of sleep a day, because i have to be at the university at 8:45. works fine for a few days, but i have to sleep more on weekends then, which often brings up another problem: i can't sleep when i am drunk. same like faustgfx here. i'm lying awake for hours, but no way i could actually fall asleep. _________________

If I go under 7 hours its a downward spiral. For the rest I haven't really analyzed it. Sometimes I feel like a rag sometimes I don't. I tend to not look at the clock when I go to bed. Because If I feel like I should be tired I tend to get tired eventhough I am not really tired.
I do have problems sleeping when I am working really hard and extended hours. There is this point where I get tired and then I get passed tiredness and I just feel kind of weird. Except for I can only function on high speed you know? And I get those endless thought streams that are about absolutely nothing usefull. When I am like that there is just no sleeping. And when I come down I fall apart. Which is my current state actually.
I have also noticed that when I drink coffe at night I tend to wake up around 2 or 3 and be absolutely awake. This always happens eventhough I wouldn't know how to explain it. I fixed it with placebo coffee. As long as it tastes like coffee...

Those times when I slept for 12 hours I found it impossibly to go to sleep the following day, I usually sleep for 5-6.
Should follow Leonardos sleeping habits then..hehe
Thanks for answers.

I sleep about 4-6 hours a day normally. Then I start feeling like a corpse, and sleep for about 12 hours. Works for me. If I keep the 4 hours of sleep per 24 hours up for long, I lose my inspiration to do anything. I feel old. _________________ Asurfael's Artpage

I need alot of sleep, 8-9 hours to function at peak performance
But normaly I just get around 7 hours. But anyway I've read that the brain adjusts real quick to fewer hours of sleep. After a couple of days of 6-7 hours of sleep you ALWAYS wake up after around 7 hours on a weekend for example. The brain has gotten used to a certain sleep cycle and is trimmed on those hours, kinda neat.
I'm real envious of people who can sleep for 5-6 hours and do something meaningful that day, like matthew seems to be able to. |

One of the secrets to getting along on little sleep is to take a 20 minute catnap mid afternoon. Doing that many people can cut a few hours out of their night time sleep.
Also, if you have insomnia, check the amout of caffine you ingest. The way caffine affects people is really different from person to person. Some can drink it all day long and others will lose sleep with 1 or 2 cups a day.
I generally get along on 5 or 6 hours a night, but if I get just a bit sleepy mid afternoon, I'll take a quick (10 or 15 minute) nap right in my chair. Great energizer... _________________ HonePie.com

on weekdays around 6-7 hours and it takes varying amounts of time to get sleep, lately i've tried to make it easier and usually fall asleep in maybe 20-30 minutes.
but often it's impossible to get rid of thoughts no matter what and you end up lying there for long time awake. esp. after drawing a lot before going to bed, strange things going on in the mind.
after i started working out i've slept better, which i expected. plus change in diet.
but at night around an hour before sleep i try to relax, some ambient music and crap like that. |

yeah there is, something about brain waves ( alpha and beta) but I'm not going to elaborate about this right now because its blurry in my mind.....I'll try to find my psychology notes and my thesis about sleep...very interesting stuff n_n .....wish I kept studying in psychology....long story
just a funny fact like this, I'm sure this as happened to you before...anyone ever experienced a sensation of falling down and waking up suddently feeling like you actualy fell down during the night? hehe there is a simple explanation for that...it only means you skipped a sleeping phase, you "fell asleep to quickly". There are a "hierarchic" order of phase during sleep...like a loop (relaxing period, light sleep period, dreaming period and deep sleep period)
I myself am a light sleeper, even though from a medical point of view adults requires an average of 8 hours of sleep and children around 12, I get around 4 hours. And I fonction very well in my everyday life...no lack of energy, no concentration problem and no temper problem either. I meditate alot (Kenpo Chi-Kong stuff), it helps a alot n_n

this is SO very true and effective, I've read an article about this and myself I take a short nap everyday after work/university while my roomate comesback from work then its restaurent time n_n
A compagny was mention in that article about "power naps" which has a napping room for their employee who themselves get a napping pause during the day. Its suppose to improve there mood and performance.

Hehe this is true and it happens often. There are many tricks to overcome that....its mostly a willpower thing, just diverge you thoughts toward something soothing, something that would help you sleep. Like floating on a river while looking at the sky....its cheesy as hell but if you can close your eyes and heard it....see it its very effective. _________________ I touch myself only where it counts |

About the naps, it's true. I usually take a nap of about 20-25 mins everyday.
But beware, taking naps of longer periods, like 45 mins or an hour will let you sleepy all the evening. And at night you won't be able to sleep. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

That's very interesting.
I use to sleep 7 or 8 ours.
I haven't ever tried to use some ours for more freetime.
I think I should....
That 20 minute catnap sounds very effective.
And what's about "Kenpo Chi-Kong"? - paranoid
Is this hard to learn? |

I have tried meditation and yoga too. Especially yoga works for me because i can concentrate on my body.
But when my mind really gets going nothing can stop it. Whatever I try.
And paranoid...That falling when you fall asleep thing is interesting. I have that all the time. Often I spasm so violently that I wake up again..sometimes repeatedly. |

hymm , i sleep waaaay too much. Sometimes like 12 hours. My problem is that when i'm at home during the day i can't do anything, i just go around and waste time, and when it's midnight i got so many ideas , so much energy and i just want to paint/do other stuff, and i end up going to bed when its 6 in the morning.
The thing that upsets me is that not sleeping at night is unhelthy, right ?
i don't know what to do, when i wake up after 8 hours of sleep i feel SOOO sleepy i can't even open my eyes. I only get up if i really have to (for egzample to work, i skip classe:) )
i will try to mess whit that phases of sleep + plus that 20 min nap thing
ps. i don't drink coffe _________________ portfolio | art blog |

general sleeping habits diagramed as a week:
Sunday - Wake at 7am Goto sleep at 12pm
---------------------------------
Start of pattern:
---------------------------------
Monday - Wake at 8am - sleep at 2am
Tuesday - Wake at 9am - sleep at 3am
Wednesday - Wake at 10am - sleep at 4am
thursday - Wake at noon - stay awake all night
friday - Still awake from previous night - sleep at 7pm
Saturday - Wake at 5am - sleep at midnight
--------------------------------
/End pattern.
so, basically, 6-8 hours each night progressively staying awake an hour or so later each night, then stay awake 2 days in a row, and pass out mid-evening, and wake up at stupid times in the morning before the sun has risen. |

If you cannot sleep in, just don't move until you're asleep. Sounds silly, but it seem to work! Read and tried it yesterday. |

for me it is just consistancy, if I go 7,4,8,4,7,3,6, in a week the fangs come out and their is hell to pay. But if I get 5,5,5..... then I am good to go and dont really have much of a problem staying alert and happy. Although I do recommend a mad deep 12 hour sleep session once a month. |
