Some friends and I were talking the other day about how it will be weird to go to college this year and whatnot. It dawned on us that none of us wanted to go through 4 (or more) years of school to then be transplanted into a job for the rest of our lives. It just seems kind of disgusting.
So I came up with a hypothetical scenario that I believe would be a ton of fun. I personally enjoy learning a lot. I read constantly and just enjoy learning new things. So my proposed plan was that for every year or or 2 that you worked a shitty job you could spend one year traveling and doing whatever you wanted to do. (not the best ratio of work to vacation but whatever) then repeat the process.
I was just thinking about how long that could work before you were tired of it. But throughout that time you would probably learn enough skills to land a job doing what you want right? In my situation it would go like this, By next fall from working 2 jobs I could have enough money to go to Sheridan art fundamentals program (just using that because sheridan came up in a topic today) I would learn a lot and then save up again.
Perhaps the next time I would go to California, do some Art center at night or Watts atelier. OR go up to CDIS in Vancouver and learn some 3d animation.
during all this time you could learn on your own. Sure its not quite 4 years of a bachelors degree but would you not end up with enough knowledge and skill AT SOME POINT to do something that you really want for a job? (plus some real life education and a bit of adventure)
Sorry, to me this sounds like so much fun it gets me going. So what do you think is this "education" a viable option or do you think you would end up all over the board, perhaps "half" motivated and not really great at anything?
Of course it depends on the person but I thought I might hear some different viewpoints.

Yeah, I can relate to that, I graduated high school a year ago and I took a few classes at the community college but I kept asking myself, what am I doing this for? I've basically been a "slacker" for a about a year now living with my mother...
It's just weird because in high school you're fed all this energy about going out into the world and going to school and becoming someone, but then once you're out of that environment it all just seems to dissapear...Like in high school everyone was telling me how talented I was and what were my plans for the future. I used to want to go to these art schools and I talked with the people from the colleges that visited and I just kept found myself aksing "What for?"
The education scenario you mentioned seemed like it would work, it might be a little stressfull now and then if you don't have enough money, but if that's what you feel like doing you should do it... |
