I spent the last week in sunny San Diego hitting the the 2002 ComiCon. I managed to snap a few pics between all the fun and business and thought I'd share. For those of you who don't know, I'm working for Marvel on a new Spider Man mini-series with Skottie Young and Kaare Andrews. I'd love to post some of the paintings I'm doing, but I think my editor would have a seizure. Ironically, the year I get work with Marvel, they decide to not have any substantial convention presence. Oh well, on to the virtual tour!
You never want to see this out your plane window. Coming in to California we got a first hand glimpse of those raging forest fires. The pic is off-center because of all the turbulance the heat was causing. To give you an idea how tall the smoke plume was, this pic was shot at around 30,000 feet --and it still towers above the plane!
The San Diego Convention center has been expanded, and it seems twice as large this year. This is a pic of the lobby of the new section. Despite all the extra room it was STILL crowded this year!
This shot covers maybe 1/3 of the convention floor. Supposedly around 75,000 people showed up this year.
The Lord of the Rings booths were pretty cool this year. There were several LoTR related booths next to each other with props, games, figures, etc. Here's a cool Cave Troll eating a kid's head.
Activision showed up with part of their E3 booth. Apparently they were hiring, so one of my friends dropped off a demo-reel.

Weee. Some more E3 leftovers! Actually, the Robotech stuff looked pretty cool. It's weird how much the ComiCon has encompassed other forms of entertainment as well.
The Pioneer Booth gave me the creeps.
The CrossGen booth. They're up and coming with a vengence. They actually took over the old Marvel booth location and were generating a lot of excitement.
Imagine how many chicks you could pick up in this hot set of wheels.
Ah, the old and reliable DC comics booth. If I heard that same episode of Batman adventures one more time I think I would have torn someone's throat out. |

Ah, the Animation Master guys were there again this year pimping the usual Alien Song and Killer Bean movies. They always make it look so easy. I happen to use and like AM quite a bit.
I happened to catch this cool Brian Prince piece (I think he even posted it on sijun) on the Animation Master backdrop. Cool!
Two nameless friends of mine, one of whom is also a Sijun member, dressed up as Boba Fett in a scratch-built costume. The other friend was one of the storm-troopers --though I'm unclear on precisely which one he was. All the costumes were amazing. The Fett costume apparently took 5 years of part-time work to construct. Amazing! I hear it's also for sale.
Lastly, I strolled around in the artist's alley and spotted quite a few cool painters. Jon Foster was there. P. Craig Russel. Adam Hughs and Donato Giancola. I happen to like Donato's work quite a bit and was suprised to find he lived in US. I always figured him to be Italian or something. Anyway, he was a nice guy so I bought a few prints off of him. Check out his website at DonatoArt.com. I also met up with Jo-Chen (Jo-Chen.com) and her sister and we talked over a lot of cool Corel Painter stategies. We swapped a lot of tips with each other and I'm anxious to get cracking on some new work!

Nice Pat!!
I haven't been back to Comic con since I dropped out of comics. Last time I went was... 1996?
It's so weird to see video game company booths at comic con. Especially that tons of comic book guys defected over to game industry(I'm one of them).
It's awesome that you got to meet Donato and Jo. I'm a fan of both of them. Great to see Brian's piece at the AM booth too!

Sweet stuff Pat. I was hoping to attend the comic con this year, but unfortunately I wasn't financially prepared by the time August came around.
Se la vi......... Hopefully I'll make it next year.
Thanks for sharing.

I wish I was there.
Maybe one day I'll have enough money/fire power to get there easily. |

To be fair, Joe Cosman modeled the character in that poster. I just did the environment, textures, and lights.
I've always been curious about the 'Con, but have never really been able to justify getting down there. Thanks for posting the pics. |
