Hello. I'm new here , and concerning art , I'm the newbiest newbie around. I do it as a hobby , never had any classes or read any books, but I really want to take the next step , cause I have lots of ideas in my head that I just don't have the skills to get them out.
So I decided to search the net for some tips , and I found this place from Craig Mullins' site ( I love his work , and he has done some stuff for Bungie Software , the creators of Halo and Marathon , and I'm a huge fan of Halo , so that's how I found his site)
So now I'm here , showing you my Master Chief (Halo's main character)
If the image is not showing , please copy and past the URL into the address bar (Damn tripod , why the hell does it do that?)
http://razorback72.tripod.com/MarkVI_copy.jpg
Ok , so here's how I did this:
First I did lots of sketches on paper using this http://halo.bungie.org/screenshots/gamekult.092602/ME0000218043_2.jpg as reference , and a couple of other screenshots , I chose the one I liked the best , and scanned it to my PC.
Then I used PhotoShop 6 to color it.
I don't know how you guys color things , but for example , I simply use a simple basic green for the whole armor , and then I use a black or white brush , with different transparencies for the shadows. All of this in different layers , so I can add little details and stuff at later times.
I really want to learn how to paint digitally like Craig , using brushes like actual painting to get that gritty look , I love that.
The way I paint (if it can be called that) takes up too much time.
Oh , and I can't draw backgrounds to save my life and I have no knowledge what so ever on anatomy , or perspective.
What tips do you have for newbies like me that want get started.
I can't take classes now , I'm on the middle of the 11th grade.
I know I have some talent , but since my 12 years of age that I haven't noticed any improvment on my skills.

Don't click on the link, you have to copy and past the URL into the adress bar. Yes , I know its wierd but Tripod works that way (don't ask me why).
It should work then... I think. |

Hey there! It's looking pretty good so far! A few things I think that can be improved on:
-The white backgroud is jarring against the figure, it's hard to make out what's going on there since the values are so similar and the white background is just screaming out
-His armor doesn't look "shiney" enough, I don't have Xbox but from what I remember master chief's armor is more shiney and reflective correct? It kinda looks like plastic or foam rubber right now, without enough highlights. I could be wrong though since I haven't played the game before but I'm thinking like Green Goblin in the spiderman movie
Just a few different thoughts, not sure if it's too helpful. Keep up the good work.

If you're not going to do an environment, my foremost suggestion would be to *at least* put a shadow under him... it would instantly give him a lot more dimension... you can even suggest an environment by cleverly crafting the shadow so that it appears to fall over terrain or a grate or a wall or a curb or something... |

Thanks for answering.
I agree with the white background thing , I'm going to make a simple texture , like a rusty metal wall.
As for the shine in his armour , this guy is from Halo 2 , not Halo 1.
He's a little less shiney , but he's still shiney.
I just have no idea how I should do that.
Are there any good tuturials on the net that you guys could point me to?
Thanks. |

I think its great. Some minor aspects of anatomy of the guy's body are a little off, like his hands (there just a little small). What you could possibly do if you want 2 make it shinier (and you probably already know how to do this) is that u could make a new layer over ur original piece (make it completely blank). Then, u can do shine effects on that layer not the backround; airbrush, paintbrush, etc. If you dont like the way it comes out jus delete the new layer. |
