I'm in the New York City area and I've been looking for locations where I could get free art lessons and such. I've found places where I can get this done, but I've also been curious if there are places in the city where I can learn how to use Adobe software like Photoshop, Streamline, Illustrator, and the like. I find that my own pace of self instruction is a bit lacking and I could do better.
I'd appreciate any productive leads in regards to this inquiry. Thanks in advance for any responses that can help. _________________ [:: Digital Marmalade! ::]

unfortunately Adobe is in business to make money, so as for Free software, will only b Trial versions, but what u could do is get hold of some earlier editions of the software cheap on the ebay or somewhere like that and upgrade it |

I think you mistook the message in my post for one of an individual searching for software when I'm searching for software usage instruction. I have the programs I've specified in my earlier posting. I'm looking for someplace within the city that'd be willing to give me free instruction in using the programs, either having me as an on-site volunteer doing stuff, or paying a reasonably low fee.
IF anyone knows of anything like that I'm more than eagerly interested in what you've got to share. _________________ [:: Digital Marmalade! ::]

Not for free, but if your in schooll you can always look forward to college courses:)... but no, free training in a specialized field wouldn't make sense now would it?
Hrmmm... I guess if I were to really think about it you could always look for an internship, but then comes the whole interviewing part and the whole having reasons why you should be hired and this and that and so on. So yeah if you can get an internship you could learn stuff like photoshop, and no there is no free ride where you can do nothing for lessons. |

You want to learn and better your skillset, but money is an issue. The best advice I could give is buckle down; if you cannot afford instruction then you're going to have to make the time - from your own time - to sit down and really focus on learning on your own - for the time being.
There isn't a skill in the world that isn't acquired without individual focus and study.
In 1995 I was in a very similar situation. I had just graduated and was broke; I went in debt just to get a new machine so I could learn the new stuff. In a bookstore one day I stumbled across a computer art magazine that featured a step by step illustration process using Painter by illustrator Rick Kirkman. Using Rick's tutorial as a basis I dedicated 2- 4 hours almost every night to creating illustrations using his techniques, and almost a year later, with a new and improved portfolio, I landed a job doing content illustration for a small web dev shop. The rest is history.
Now you have a great advantage nowadays, because there are TONS of tutorials on the web on digital painting and illustration (there was no Sijun.com or Conceptart.org back in 1995). There are a host of tools and resources at your disposal. You just now have to make the time to practice. If you can't make the time then you may have to evaluate your lifestyle and such, and ask yourself:
How bad do you want it?
