Hello everyone, I've been a fan of dhabih's art since the old "Chapels Realm" days. I'm a programmer and a hobbiest artist. I've done a lot of pixelart but the art of painting has always mistified me. I noticed recently that my pixelart had been getting bigger and bigger and it was no longer an efficent way to do the art I was enjoying. I made the following two images...
_____
Inspired by artist like Dhabih and Jason Engle I decided to follow dhabi's tutorial and see what I could come up with. The result is pictured below. I got as far as figure 6 and didn't have a clue as how to go about "refining".
So what i'm left with is this, it's very obvious i'm still learning the photoshop tools...
If you have any suggestions for a digital painter (with no painting expirence) starting out I'd be more then happy to hear them.
While Im at it, I found an artist who's style I really liked, I was wondering if any of you had any insights as to how he achieved his look and feel?
A link to his work is here What i'm most curious about is how he is able to preserve the line art while shading... |

that's a story that strikes close to my heart, being a computer science major and hobbiest artist.
The first three characters all look like earlier street fighter type graphics, although the writing on the sword looks a little goofy. The second looks pretty good so far, I always kind of wondered what "refining" means myself
as for that artist you posted about, I can't really tell you how they did it other than being an exceptional artist, but if you like that style you'll probably also like Ratbat's style, they post here in the forum as well if you haven't seen it already.
Keep up the good work, they're all very good, especially for a frist attempt at photoshop painting. |

Hello
I think all the pictures are great. That is something that I have problem with, Paint muscles and stuff. Very good.
With the refining part I think Dhabib and other mean, zoom in the picture and look after smalls strokes and stuff that dont look good and also add more shadow to small surfaces and more light to highlight. Simply that you would fix the small problems in pictures.
Anyway, Im not Dhabib so I cant be 100% shore of what he meant.
have a nice day

if you don't want to destroy your linework keep it on the separated layer above what you are painting.
check some tutorials for "layers" in photoshop , and then for "coloring lineart in photoshop", i'm sure google.com will give you all the answers, there are milions of tutorials on that subject. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

Thanks! I thought that painter was the primary program that people used to do this type of work. I went to barnes and nobel last week and check out their digital art/photoshop section. I couldn't find a single book on digital painting. It was all stuff about making buttons for websites and re-touching photographs. I was beginning to feel that this was some undocumented black art. The only tutorial I've seen for painting in photoshop was dhabih's.
I'll go searching. |
