I haven't been posting much on forums lately, studying and painting is taking all my time, especially the former.. about 16 hours every day.. yeah, I don't have much personal life, but actually art is all I need.
Now that Two Towers is almost in the theaters it's time to post some fan art I did several pics of the Attack to the Isengard and one Treebeard illustration a while back. I've been doing this concept painting quite long time now, it was very hard to come up with good looking concept.. I think ents are one of the most difficult characters in Tolkien's books to illustrate.. well, here's my try:
Comments & critique (though I don't think I'm gonna touch this pic again) are welcome! _________________ www.TimoVihola.com

I think those 16h a day do really show. Also the other pics behind this link are really cool. Great colors and light! |

It's a great image but according to the subject matter aren't they supposed to seem a bit stiffer then your representation? I remember there being more of a stiff and awkward feeling about them, but hey I could be entirely mistaken.
It's some nice work none the less . |

nexusnet, good to hear you like it!
Enayla, Thanks! I liked your new paintings too, especially the first pic!
antx, Thanks for the compliments!
Petteri, Nice to see yet another Finnish artist on board! there seems to be quite a bit of Finns here Kiitos kehuista!
DrunkenMonk, Glad you like it! I've seen many ent illustrations which had the stiff tree trunk look and feel.. I wanted to do something different (=original) with my own version.
This creature was inspired by another Peter Jackson movie called Braindead (aka Dead Alive), it had this wicked creature called Sumatran rat monkey (or something like that), hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ www.TimoVihola.com

Hey Ed!
Almost missed your reply because the thread had dropped to the second page..
Where are you taking the courses? Does the school have a website anywhere? I would like to check it out.
Nice to see you expanding to new areas of expertise, when you've finished the course you can start teaching me
While I'm here I might add two images as well..
I think this was the second sketch.. emphasis was on the contours and I was trying to find interesting forms to be used for the final image: (proportion wasn't important on this stage)
And a progress shot, originally I had black lines that took quite a while to draw but I ended up destroying 'em:

The ant painting is amazing. The design of the ent itself is beautifull, especially the tangled roots. Also i really love the lightning, i only think ents weren't supposed to look this evil.
The ratmonkey is cool as well, i like the wacky expression. again a great job on the lighning.
Great work! _________________ r3t-art |

Cool stuff. I find the first image nicely rendered, albeit a little flat. Very "Bg". Keep it up. _________________ http://www.somniostudios.com |

Hey Bg,
Here's the school website. It's geared towards professionals who's already
working in the field, but students can take it too I suppose.

r3t, I finally saw the film and the ents,
PJ and Weta went for the friendly look, not as good as I had hoped. But there were few scenes in the Fangorn forest that had fantastic "Tim Burtonish" miniatyre look! Overall I would have prefered darker appearance. I kept the Isengard attack in mind when I designed mine, so they could look really scary in dark and menacing lighting.
Thanks for the comments!
Great to see you posting again Henrik, the matte painting and the carrier you posted at Cgtalk look great!
I agree with you about the flatness, I should've played around with cast shadows of the roots and made the whole character
more three dimensional, this is a common problem when I start with a line drawing. Thanks.
Hey Ed, sorry for the slow reply, I was on a holiday in Helsinki, watched Two Towers a couple of times (in a good theater this time), bought some dvd's and art of episode 1 & 2 plus one Paul Kidby art book.
Erik Tiemens and Ryan Church had some really awesome paintings in the EP2 book, seems like those guys were in the same school as Mullins hehe awesome technique!
Checked out the school website, sounds good, the prices aren't bad either. I tried shooting with a crappy digital camera few months ago, it was fun but I couldn't get the results I had hoped for (the camera was small so it shaked all the time and it didn't work well in dimm lighting),
would be nice to try shooting with professional equipment. Do you have any experiences to share yet?
I'm still heavily focusing on my studying and doing small freelance jobs every once in a while. Remember the British game company I talked about, they wanted me there for an interview but when they checked out the flight prices from Finland to England they backed off, the flights were as expensive as business class from America to England so they decided to hire a British artist instead
The majority of the companies (=projects) I'm interested in are in US and the Visa requirements just got way too high so it's pointless to even send a reel there anymore.
Now, one of the options I have is to make a game demo with my brother (who just got out of army) but it's perhaps a bit too risky with two people, finishing my short film would be safer option but I'm not sure if it will get me anywhere. One thing is for sure, freelancing doesn't fit me too well because I don't enjoy negotiating with clients.
Here's one more freak creature for you Flat: (btw. the dragon pic of yours was really something it's as a wallpaper on my desktop now)
(Contrast and details really help to hide the crappy drawing, the only thing I like about this is the head) _________________ www.TimoVihola.com

I read that Henrik is working in England....were you trying out for that market as well? Yeah, it's tougher to get a working VISA in da US with the new rules. Dunno how one can get around it unless you can go through the regiment and fulfill the requirements.
I sent stuff to JAK Films, but no reply yet. I don't expect one as I didn't get a reply from ESC either. Man, these boyz are territorial! It's all a click ya know..
Dunno, maybe I'll try for ILM as they'll give me a job there or so they said few years back. But, now the policy at ILM has changed too. So, I dunno.
Anyway, I got a business license so I'll start my own studio. More taxes out da window...:p
Haven't seen Two Towers but alot of people are tearing up cuz they loved it so muchee.
Yeah, Ryan Church is pretty damn good..and a nice guy too.

Frost, Glad you like 'em, Here's one for you: (I love painting these )
The original sketch:
Ed: Yeah, Henrik's doing contract work for Framestore CFC from time to time (and I believe he did some work for Mill Film too until the film department closed).. England is definitely the place I'll be keeping my eye on, moving inside EU is really easy and they even speak english down there
Those companies should really take you on board, they don't know what their missing, I would love to see few bots designed by you in Matrix 2&3 or in Episode 3! The current droids are too friendly looking, I want to see mean bastards and not some long necked metal ducks which fall over if you touch them
Hey, if you really decide to go for it and start your own studio, give me a call, I'll be glad to help you anyway I can!
btw. You can count me in as Two Towers lover hehe It had really well used special effects, Gollum was clearly the focus and less important scenes were quite rushed but actually it worked very well.. Ep2 suffered from the problem that everything was made using the same attention to detail, important scenes look as good as the less important.. overall TTT was pretty much on par with any ILM production.
Shin: Thanks, I like your art too! _________________ www.TimoVihola.com

Yeah, I especially like the way you handled the eye balls. That - just little bit of lavender in the hi-light is very angelic, subtle enough to tickle my fancy. Hee hee.....
Well, after Bush gets kicked out of the White House and they change this stoopid Homeland Security thing...maybe the talented peeps outside the borders can work in the free democratic nation of ours. Let's hope for the best....

oDD, thanks!
Novacaptain, no wonder he ain't getting ride and the size may be an issue too You're right about the nose, it's facing more to the side, I'll have to fix that! Thanks for pointing it out
silber, Thanks! The creature was the thing that infected the mother with the disease and killed the ape in the zoo and yeah, there were lots of blood haha
Ed, I'm dying to try out some mechanic pics for a change but I can't get the perspective nailed down on my sketches, is there anything on your website that I could use?-)
Jezebel, I'll do my best Thanks!
Malachi Maloney, thanks pal!
Max Kulich, thanks for the compliments!
Sukhoi, I'm just a bit slow at painting haha I promise you'll see the proof in the near future Thanks for the encouragement, I needed it!
Anthony, Thanks!
I revised the caveman character I started in 2001, this is the biggest freak of them all heheh:
PS. Finally managed to compress (the quality ain't too great) the several months ago recorded Beast of Burden painting video under 20 megs and put it online to my website. _________________ www.TimoVihola.com
