Battle Chasers is on top of my pile of "comics too good to be filed away in the archives," and I re-read it from time to time. Today was one of those times
How can Joe Mad possibly want to do anything but draw battle chasers. I mean. I understand that designing characters is NEAT and all that. But for an artist, what greater more enjoyable thing could there be than drawing a kickass story in the perfect fantastic world, with the sickest colorists in the business working over you? I just don't understand how Joe could not want to keep doing this comic. Do you guys have any theories on it?
I was just looking at how godly his SKETCHES in the back of BC 9 were. Dear Jesus. You could take one of those sketches, blueline marks and all, and just slap it on a comic cover with NO fucking colors and every passerby would open the comic. He is a fucking genius. I honestly think Joe Mad has got to be the most talented comic artist in all of North America, POSSIBLY the world--though granted, I don't know many artists from other countries. For those of you who hate Joe Mad's art or think it's not all that, what are the weaknesses with it in your opinion? Which artists do you think are better, and why?
I think a lot of Joe Mad's greatness gets taken for granted too. His texturing is phenomenal. His dynamic lighting as well. His CLOTHING folds are just brilliant. It's like he's captured the essence of the visual world and just magnified and stylized it to a higher degree of precision than any other artist I have ever seen.
I mean there's a thing called synergy. That when a group of people collaborate to produce something, the quality of the production is greater than the quality of all the productions combined that those people could have worked on individually. I think Joe Mad, the battle chasers story, and liquid have the greatest synergy of any creative production ever. Granted, it has a lot to do with the fact that fantasy is probably my favorite genre too. Cuz I mean I honestly believe that the character designs and the world that battle chasers was in adds a lot to the value of the book. I mean when I finished the Trade paperback of Battle Chasers for the first time, I had a huge smile plastered on my face. This story is just absolutely packed with quality. I would say that it has the highest quality of art per page of any comic I have ever read. It's just totally engaging and gorgeous from beginning to end for every square inch.
And the story of Battle Chasers is just absolutely PERFECT. This comic is like every SINGLE THING I think is cool about comic stories wrapped up in one tight ass technicolor bundle. I cry when I see great artists drawing realistic stories about detectives and cops and robbers and all this motherfucking bullshit. How, when you as an artist have the ability to create ANY STORY CHARACTER OR WORLD that you want, could you decide to do something that already exists =/. *shakes head* I mean the world in Battle Chasers was so cool and believeable. The skyhold prison, the wargolems, the mythical creatures, the way they talk about the entire world as being this rugged uncharted place, where impossible evil lurks just outside of civilization. I mean damn. Hearing the battle chasers talk about past battles that they had when they were around that campfire for that little frazetta backstory. Just awesome. The battle chasers world is just so huge, diverse, interesting, and dangerous. The characters all have so much personality and intrigue to them. August is so cool. I mean he really does an awesome job of filling the role of this mysterious superpowerful wizard. One of the great things about storytelling is setting up cool, intriguing mysteries about the characters to fascinate the reader. Battle Chasers has them in spades. They hint at this whole dilemma about the wargolems and their place in society, even as one walks among them. This whole history that they have with once being used as an aide to humanity and then being destroyed. So intriguing and creates a great tension in the story. Obviously the mystery of exactly who August is and what he can do. I mean you know the final battle between him and Knolan is gonna be so damn epic. Can you imagine. Just think of the environment Joe is gonna stage it on. I mean it's just gonna be awesome. Or was gonna be. The mystery of who Aramus is, why he disappeared, what exactly is true and false about what Nefar says about him. And there's just limitless potential for Joe to go places and do epic fucking shit with this story. It just kicks all kinds of fucking ass man.
I truly hope Joe Mad comes back to Battle Chasers at some point. I can't fathom for the life of me what he could possibly see in working for a fucking stupid retarded video game company versus drawing this incredible story.
In fact I've decided that I must try to pencil, ink, and color as good as the Battle Chasers team and create some fanfics based in the Battle Chasers world. I just feel like I have to do everything I can to continue the legacy of greatness that is Battle Chasers. Cuz as a fan that's what I wish other fans would do and my philosophy is do unto others as you'd have them do unto you ^_^ |

He's too lazy, him and Charest are both aggravating. I'd take Mignola or russo over them. _________________ "i'm so ahead of my

pimphofoo, you're talking about Travis Charest right? How can you take anyone over Travis Charest? Maybe I can agree with you on Mad, he's only human. But Charest? No. He isn't lazy, he's... a perfectionist. His work can't be confined by monthly deadlines. |

no way honestly, capullo was so much better than mad ever thought about being. His pencils for spawn were utterly amazing. I think many would agree _________________ Say would you like a chocolate covered pretzel? |

You mean CRAPullo?
The king of noodling, over-detail, and horrid anatomy? Yea, he was one of the greats! He sucked. As soon as he took over pencilling Spawn, I stopped collecting it. Everything just looked like a huge mess on the page, and I think many people would agree. |

Not me Capullo is one of the best pencil artists ever ... and his books always came out on time . His attention to detail was amazing and he told a story well with his art . Not as well as Todd M. but stioll very good . Now Angel Medina the guy who took over spawn is truly amazing but spawn just got boring .. |

I believe Todd gets the blame for the overly detailed inking on Capullo-pencilled issues of Spawn. I'm not a big fan of Capullo's pencils anyway but the inks aren't his fault. |
