I had been doing a lot of caricatures lately, and felt the need to do something else. This started as a tiger painting from a reference photo I took from the zoo, and then I just kind of kept adding to it.
*I accidently copyed over the origainal post, so here is the finish *

When the colisseum was opened, they celebrated 2 months of games non stop. It was entrance free. They took around 200 000 different beasts from the north of europe (zebras, lions...) changing the ecosystem there. So they may have brought a couple of tigers too...
Anyways, onto the pic. I like it, the tiger is pretty well rendered, with a real look. The background isn't as defined lightwise as the tiger, maybe add more contrast to the shadows?
Also perspective is a bit weird, I think. We can see the front leg of the tiger, but the gladiator's legs are not in picture, so either the gladiator is on his knees or he has no legs Also, if we could see both the gladiator and the tiger from our POV, maybe we shouldn't see the public?
I just try to find things to improve, but I like it as it is (and it's better than what I could do right now)
Hope this helps... _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

tigers are only available in south america, and some places of very far eastern asia.
rome didn't even know most of those places existed. |

Can't see the picture, it's forbidden or something.
On Tigers - There were tigers as near to Europe as the Caspian sea(Caspian Tigers), though now they are extinct in that region. There are no tigers in South America, as far as I know. As for tigers being only in far eastern asia, what about Bengal Tigers? I'm sure the romans had tigers shipped in to the gladitorial arenas _________________ -------Wicked------- |

I like the atmospheric feel. Especially the way the contrast lessens as you move back in space. I agree with Ragnorok though, it kind of looks like two pictures spliced together. The viewer is at eye level with the tiger (Which is cool) but how high off the ground is a tiger's eyes? (maybe three feet or so), therefore we should be viewing the gladiator around thigh level and probably seeing some of the ground behind him.
Also the white fur on the tiger shifts nicely as it goes from light to shadow, but the black stripes stay the same value. The black should get darker as it moves into the shadows as well. Great painterly feel though. Keep it up. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

I like the debate this has caused... I am trying to come up with some ways to reconcile the POV problem. I do intend him to look more like he's on his knees, but I don't know if I really want to extend the picture plane lower to incude that. Maybe it can be done with gesture, or by making him look injured. I'll do some experiments. Anyway, Thanks to everyone who posted feedback, it was very helpful |

There are no tigers in South America.
There are tigers in India, and Asia....which I assure you, Rome knew about.
Your posts smell like stupid.

ok guys, simmer down. it smells like stupid because it was MEANT to start a debate. it's just something i like to do.
notice there were no replies to this post for nearly 12 hours - not typical for such a good drawing - and since has had many, albeit not really related to the picture as much as the tiger.

Ok, I can see the picture now. I won't reinterate what Ragnarok and Inspector Lee said, but the gladiator seems a bit flat. Might add highlight spots on his helmet? But then again it's far away and it adds an atmospheric touch to the piece. Good work. _________________ -------Wicked------- |

Kitty looks a lill bit b0red. Maybe we should toss dann82 into teh arena and ensure some serious entropy. Wuteva, dats some sweet shit!
Just nitpickin... Don't you think your perspective is a little bit off? Is that tiger standing on a big rock or something? Just doesn't seem to fit to the gladiator in the bg. _________________

The new values for the black lines of the tiger work great. Much more deepness.
The new perspective works better, but I have the feeling the viewer is a gladiator that is lying the arena, due to the line of the colisseum the horizon line isn't horizontal. If this is the effect you want, I think the tiger shouldn't be so horizontal, it makes it look as if it wasn't on the ground.
Don't know if it makes any sense...
Just my opinion ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

Some of Today's work for you. I think the gladiator now needs some darker values, but besides that....

I accidently named the jpeg of the final the same as my original version, so the final is now seen at the top of the page. Thanks to all the people who have responded, I had more fun with this one because of it. |
