Hi all of you, ive been introduced to this forum bya friend quite some time ago, but have not been wandering it too much. Although, from what i have seen, Sijun is really one of the best places to learn and have fun!
I am a newbie to digital art, and i use a tablet i "borrowed" from my cousin > i hope to learn from you guys, as alot of you simply make me feel depressed about my own 'stuff'.
erm, i painted this with my mouse/tablet for about 2 hours, then gave up, cause i didnt think i was going anywhere :/
She is suppsoed to look like Zhang ZiYi, and was referenced from a photo in a magazine.
Here it is:
comments please!
also, i was wondering, as i use PS6.0, is digital painting very 'open' or must u abide by rules? I mean, to openly declare something as a painting even after having used 6 filters, hehe, that kinda thing. I used the Airbrush tool for my picture above...is that painting? Cause the paintbrush tool is v. different.
And no, i have no art background :/ |

About "digital art"... there are no real rules. You can do whatever you want and I'm sure there will be a group of people that work in a similar way.
Here in Sijun, in my experience, people usually try to avoid using filters and get whatever effect they could get from a filter by hand. So if you are using your hand it's better: airbrush, brush, pencil... Many people use the airbrush, and the brush as well. It's a matter of taste really.
About the pic, I like it! It's a bit flat, but that happens usually when working from a photo, because you try to paint what you see in 2d. If you try to draw it in shapes instead of lines, you'll probably do better. As some good artists around here say, more thinking less painting So think ahead what you're going to do to get a better result (I myself usually don't, that's why my art isn't as good as it could)
Also, add some color or contrast, even if it's just a sepia tone. Right now I think it's too grey.
Well, these are only opinions, and only my opinions, so take them as that.
And keep painting! _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

thanks for the reply :>
and yes, about painting with shapes- ill remember that !
thanks again
ahh.. this is my first fantasy, no reference landscape(im not kidding.) :/ people, pls pls C&C Please...... i know it looks quite terrible... maybe those of you who want some practise can do an overpaint? that be great! there are some dark pencil lines there, which i was too lazy to paint over...
i havent honed the ability to work with shadows, and i find landscapes /area design/painting wonderful :>
should i just start by painting from references? :/

welcome, have a good stay
to put it simply, you paint whatever the f*ck you want
that first pic, good job, just dont blur edges, and do u use layers? that should help in keeping things clean
(i didnt know airbrush is different? heck i dont use a tablet anyway, i dont really "paint")
and the second pic, very nice lights, but work on the stern(is that the front?) of the boat, on the very left side the railings and hull should go back downwards instead of all the way up, to indicate that the hull is round, right now it looks very flat _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

for "ZiYi" i didnt use layers :/ neither did i on the second lol <---- bad laazy boy.
Anyway thanks for comments on the tugboat, [i tried to make it look beached..] dont think i might go back to the sketch anyway, cause im gonna leave it as an example for myself :>
many thanks Godwin, and no, i think the stern is the back? the Hull is the centerpiece and the Forward area is the Bow. |

Welcome utmuki I rather you not post that pic of the project lol Keep it tEh $3cr37! But good job, whats the specs on the wacom tablet you borrowed? I hope to get a 9x12 to paint, i tryed a 4x5 at school but its like cheap sketching plus it was a system with super low RAM therefore troubling within a photoshop environment :/ Hmm.. i wana try painter as well that should be fun but school doesnt have it... I guess I'll have to wait till i get my wacom tablet. _________________ Open your eyes... and see the world as it really is... |

Another interesting tip, for proportions:
Flip the image horizontally. If it still looks right to you, it probably is. Many proportion errors can be seen this way. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa
