seeing as i'm an international student, i was wondering if anyone could shed light on how common (or uncommon, as the case may be) it is for videogame companies to give out work visas to a prospective art department employee, as compared to, say, financial companies to prospective consultants, for example...

while my college may be able to get placements with various companies, my problem is that i am considering deferring college for a while... before anyone gets on my case about that, i'll give you some background... i'm 24 years old, turning 25 in february, and i've been in college for the last 3 and a half years... 3 were spent at American University pursuing a visual media degree, after which i got dismissed owing to a low gpa (mainly it was because i was taking a lot of basic courses that weren't challenging me in the least, not helped by completely unmotivated professors, though i scored well in most of my "tougher" courses)... so now i'm at a community college pursuing an illustration associates degree, and i'm coming to the realization that more school just isn't for me at this point in my life... that and the fact that my parents still pay for my tuition, which kills me to no end... they're also losing faith in me, as far as school is concerned, and i just want to get out and work, do something tangible, instead of being stuck in classrooms for any longer... so yes, i have given college more than just a shot, and i've given this dilemma a lot of thought (started mulling over it early this year), just so we don't get into the "don't jump your gun" discussion...

so anyways, yeah... long post to a simple question... :p

thanks in advance... Smile

It all depends on the country and how badly the game company wants you.

If a game company really wants you and they're not a small company then yes they will certainly consider trying to get a work VISA for you.

But keep in mind that it's -very- hard to get work VISAs for countries like the US. You need a degree or lots of professional experience before you'll get one. And it's very expensive for a company to try and get one, so they'll usually only do it if they think there's a good chance you'll get one.

If you're thinking about the US, I wouldn't count on a VISA for game work unless you were very well credited.

There are a lot of countries that would be easier to get into though.

hmmmm, lets see if we can use the system to our advantage using logic and reasoning...

point #1 - It is easy for someone to get into the U.S. if they get married to someone who lives here. (ok so there are some stipulations)

point #2 - the job market for what you want to do might not be that great abroad, yet you can't come here for a JOB because you want to WORK!

--- ok so it isn't making much sense to me, so I propose a solution.

You need to marry me, you can all marry me. We just go to a state that allows homosexual marriages and all is said and done. I divorce you then marry the next dude who wants to work over here.

too bad we fucking voted for republicans so that loophole will be closed soon.

Sorry, I tried

oh yeah, i guess in my sleepy stupor i forgot to specify that i was referring to US-based companies... bleh... i guess that means unless i can get myself to spooge-level quick (not gonna happen), i'm gonna have to keep my fingers crossed for the green card lottery... speaking of which, isn't that just the oddest thing you've ever seen? the green card is probably one of the toughest things to get a hold of, and yet every year the US holds a random drawing... o_O
