hey mate this is great stuff, very cool in deed.

I think you need to address the lighting situation here.

I played around with a few things not much of an improvement but you see what i mean.

Thanks everyone!!

Freddio: I see what you mean with the lighting. I'll work on that, but what do you mean by oversaturating the colours?

Also, thanks again, Freddio. Usually when I post a pic, I don't get many replies (almost makes me feel like my work is crap!). It means a lot when a moderator gives me some tips.

hmmm...from a design perspective, I can see where this style is coming from, but it's not very practicle as far as communicating an idea. This McFarlaine-esque approach feels very dirty and violent, but I think what's going on here is that the elements aren't coming together as a convincing whole. It's like if you combined a polar bear and a tiger, this image would have a polar bear front and a tiger back, with white fur on the front going straight into tiger stripes. You need to combine them, give it the size of a polar bear with black and orange and big white stripes all over it with larger claws. Does this make any sense? You've got these horns, but that sharp black element doen't show up anywhere else, neither do the stitches, or the bones, or the completely random magma hands. Right now it looks like they guy said 'make a monster with horns, stitched up eyes, magma hands, mouths on his belly, and a bone tail.' and you did exactly that, without any consideration for the whole. I'll make something really quickly to show you what I mean shortly

[edit]I tried painting over it, then another version, but I think the only real problem is the initial concept. So nothing you could control. It's just that this character's concept is way to busy, it would be nearly impossible to design it in as a 'whole'. A complete and endearing monster that would leave a lasting image in someones mind. Think of all the great game and movie monsters that 'work' and things like Aliens or Star Wars come to mind. The aliens in those movies have a couple simple premises, and the designs come from there. You could break them down into 'techno slug' or 'sleek black killing machine' or 'furry mechanic octopus'. The idea you're working from is 'demon with mouth-stomach and skeleton tail and horns and dirtiness with magma hands.' I know you're done this image now, so there's nothing you can really do, or would want to do, but in the future just remember that the simplest ideas communicate the best. Even McFarlaine will only draw 'dark evil man in long coat' or evil pointy horn beast'

Very nice critique matt. I'd say I agree with everything he said. This is not only good advice, it is simply; good design.

It is what truely seperates the thinkers from the sheep, so to speak.

Matt, how's school going? Just started he in Pasadena, well actually, mid-terms of the first semester now. How far are you into it?

Schools fantastic, I'm going through the visual communications program right now, specializing in illustration. So much fun in one place seems impossible. It's a lot of work, but I can't get enough. How's yours?
