I apologize for not organizing these thoughts better.

Neverwinter nights is an overhyped piece of shit.
it's like diablo
neverwinter gameplay is linear, it's all fighting, and it's repetitive already. there's very little thought involved in it too.
example: sector is overrun with prisoners, kill prisoners, enter building, kill prisoners, go downstairs, kill boss.
sector 2 is overrun with zombies, kill zombies, enter building, kill zombies, go downstairs, kill boss.

the interfaces are dumbed down, the worlds are less interesting/pretty and the maps are downright ugly compared to BG 1 / 2. the money/trading is simplified and makes no sense (every merchant of a certain type has the same inventory) also the fact that you can respawn upon dying shows again it's a mind-numbed arcade game, not an RPG. it is pathetic.

additionally you can only have 1 npc assistant, always have to exchange money for your aide, your aide always progresses EXACTLEY the same (gains levels the same, and talks to you about their sub quest at the exact same points in time experience wise) you also have less control over your NPC then you did even in fallout 1, where you could at least plant some items on them that they used.
the scale of the world is wrong, with buildings that seem to be 10 ft by 20 ft in the world view being more like 60 feet by 120 feet when you actually enter them, although character size is constant. areas are SMALLER than in BG 1 or 2, and have less detail. I don't know, it's just a major step backwards.

AI pathfinding is worse than in BG or in Dungeon siege, with my character unable to navigate up a ramp that he is not directly in front of.

there are some good points, like the improvements in the fighting technique which allow for different strategic moves and abilities, but in general I was VERY dissapointed

Is it dumbed down?

Really?

Well then maybe there's a chance that I could enjoy it. I always thought that all Baldurs Gate needed was dumbing down and 3D graphics.

Really.

then play dungeon siege Basse. there's a reason why fallout 1 and 2, planescape torment, Baldur's 1 and 2, etc were popular, and that reason is not dumbing down, it's plot, open ended gameplay, and customization/control.

if you're being sarcastic then sorry, it's hard to tell.

well, I haven't played NWN, but if it's anything like dungeon siege I'll pass...it's so depressing, morrowind, dungeon siege and now apparently NWN knights? Guuuh, is it just me or do PC games suck nowadays? Even SOF2 sucked IMO...the only game I've really been enjoying recently is GTA3, and that's because it has great physics and gameplay...*sigh*

okay, I've played further and am in the midst of chapter 2 now, and it's improved quite a bit. I still think it's too easy on players in a number of ways, and I still miss the detailing and NPCs of the older games, but the gamplay of this does improve to be decent.

but you have to admit chapter 1 is VERY repetitive.

I just bought this game a few days ago... so i thought i'd chime in on this topic:

I'm assuming that you've only been playing the single-player campaign, which I'd agree is kinda weak. If you'd like to experience the full potential of Neverwinter Nights I'd highly recommend trying the multi-player mode, preferrably with a live DM running the adventure - on a world of his own design. Its much more dynamic and interesting that way... and this is really what the game is all about - creating the pen-and-paper D&D experience online. The single-player campaign is really only the tip of the iceberg of what is possible. People will be creating adventures of their own with the toolset, and hosting them online. I've been spending some time on some of the better role-play oriented servers and it has been a blast. The DMs take on the roles of various monsters and NPC and actually interact with the players live. This isn't like Everquest, Diablo or anything else out there right now. It has the potential for tons more depth than anything before it, if there are good DMs running the server you play on - or designing custom single-player modules.

And no, i don't work for BioWare..

Vesusvius: I wasn't kidding actually. Baldurs Gate has always been much to tactical for me. I don't have any problem with open-ended gameplay, plot, or custumization\ controll. I have a problem with the tactics side. Tactics in Thief or Deus Ex works nice for me, but this RPG\RTS\Strategy thingie is just to complex for me.

Well, chess is too complex for me.

All that planning and seeing ahead.

But Dungeoun Siege and Neverwinter Nights are on my wish list now. Right below Morrowind.
