I have started a series of quick sketches of "Lord of the Rings" characters.
I am big fan of the movie and also I wanted to practice working with Fractal painter and a Wacom tablet, so I combined the 2 together.
I froze the frame from the movie DVD on my tv and painted it from scratch on the computer while looking at it.
I painted this image on Fractal Painter with a wacom tablet, in less than an hour.
More to follow soon. |

I checked out your website. Great stuff. Would you be able to post some kind of tutorial or simply a set of images for one of these LOTR sketches? I would love to see how you work. |

Thank you both for the compliments!
Here is the second picture in my series:
As it stands now, I have 3 images completed, and 1 in the works (already spent 40 minutes on it).
As for my technique, there is not much to it I guess. I use the airbrush tool with fairly large brushes to lay down the main shape and color, then move on to a smaller brush to add some sketchy detail. Then, before too much detail is set inplace, I quickly switch to the paintbrush tool (DIP mode), and add the finer details on the hair, the eyes, etc.
The hardest part is deciding when to stop! I am used to work on an image until it start to look like a photograph.. but I am totally avoiding that approach for these fairly quick exercises.
I hope you enjoy the rest.
Thanks for looking. |

Whoa, these are incredible. Gandalf looks awesome!
Under an hour!? That is NUTS! Wow, I'm totally impressed.
If it isn't too much trouble, would you be able to save some progress shots of your work so some of us 'lesser' artists could get a visual idea of how you work through an image? That'd be sooo much appreciated.
Anyway, I love your work. Keep posting! |

Your style is kinda warm and soft...LOVE IT
Best Lord Of The Rings fanworks I have seen so far.
...and I have seen very very very many....
FANTASTIC
Btw.: this is what you call "sceches" - to finish such a cool painting ( eveb if I could ) would take me hours. That's not a scech man that is....ahhh....FABULOUS.

Dude!
I'm serious. *Chuckles*
Damn that Gandalf picture is amazing, though somehow for a reason I can't really place myself, that picture of Arwen doesn't remind me too much of Liv Tyler. Or at least not what she looked like in the movie. It might be the chin/her lips, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Anyway, big up for your work here. It really boggles my mind how you did it. |

Thank you all guys for the great compliments!
I have been to your sites, and you all rock too!
Your interest in seeing more is definitely a push for me to continue this series.
Anyway, this is the third sketch in the series, I did this very very quickly, I think maybe 25 minutes.
Once again, I wasn't aiming toward a perfect resemblance, but mainly at capturing the mood and shapes of the image.
I should be able to post the next one, tonight. |

They all look awesome! I was watching the DVD lastnight and I thought, wouldn't it be cool to try and duplicate some of the artwork? I only lack one thing...talent...lol! Keep them coming! Can't wait to see a ringwraith! |

I actually thought it totally looked like her, but I haven't seen her since the movie, and I haven't seen the movie for a month or two. Hey, I just remembered... I own that movie! |

My DVD player (Playstation 2) is about to melt. I kept in on pause while painting all these pictures for way too long. Eh eh.. |

You must really know your process well to finish these great pieces so quickly. I think a lot of peps here (including myself of course!) would appreciate it if you saved some middle stages of your painting, so we could see how you build it up.
Thanks for showing us! |

If you paint a digital picture of a character on a digital background that you're watching on digital video, you run the risk of opening a hole in space-time!
Nice sketches. Reminds me of the LOTR movie!

Amazing Stuff man. You said that you are doing a series, are you going to do all the main characters? That would be cool. I'd like to see Legolas, and maybe some of the Hobbits. |

I hope you find it to be useful or ar least interesting to read through once.
As soon as it is done, I will post a link here. |

I can only say what the others said... OMG they look really good, really great colors, but LEON is right, it doesn't look like liv tyler... (dont worry the pics ownz anyway)
One last thing, how can you draw that detailed and only use one hour or so on the painting ? do you live in a other time dimension than we do ? |

Most excellent!
I'll be trying your step by step for a self-portrait I'm planning, though I have this sneaking feeling that the nice result isn't merely a matter of approach / technique / method, but more a result of skilled perception, and sense of form and depth.
Thank you very much for taking the time, Roberto |

Awesome - thanks so much Rob!
I agree with Torstein, you seem to have an incredible observational eye. You're obviously very well-practiced. Great job on the tutorial, very well written.
I appreciate you taking the time to do that. I look forward to seeing more of yourr stuff! |
